It's definitely a foolish move given the history of the site.

The fact that it must be fireproofed shouldn't even be an issue, but how will they fireproof it & keep the aesthetic?

    Intumescent Coating

That's how the exposed steel of the NY Times building was fireproofed.

Zen explained to us that intumescent coating, when exposed to fire, tends to blow up like a balloon, covering bare steel in a similar fashion as ordinary fireproofing. I can't remember the rating he told us it was given(4-5 hours, not sure).

Any bets on how many gallons of intumescent paint it would take to cover all those exposed Calatrava arches & beams?

The cost overruns on this project are immense.

The $30 million cost of fireproofing the street-level structure is three-quarters of one percent of $3.4 billion.

I was thinking about that paint, since Zen was the first person to point it out to me. All of the buildings going up in London have it painted on by default.

I wonder what he would think of this ridiculous situation? *sigh* They're going to have to go through with it now that it has gone public. Once Schumer started calling them out, they were toast.

But painting all those arches will be a JOB CREATOR!

Maybe they should privatize the PANYNJ?

Progress here, with a big arch component on site.

Not sure what the column-like piece is that's gone up at the SE corner near Dey & Church ...

That tall thing in the last picture looks like an emergency exit stairs. it's been there for a while already.

Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't noticed that escape stair before.

They had to angle the stair ramp because they are doing work removing and reinforcing the slurry wall there. That's where they are constructing the connection to the NRW from the Transit Hall.
