Thread: WTC Transit Hub - by Santiago Calatrava

^Your statement is correct, the moving roof was possible to build, but its integration would exceed the budget. Most renderings of the hub that are around the internet depict the old design with the moving roof scheme, which has been replaced by a less expensive operable skylight.

This structure had to be redesigned not entirely because of cost issues but for safety reasons too; the current design is capable of resisting a blast bomb and even can survive a building collapse.

This structure is similar to that of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI, also by Santiago Calatrava.

It still lines up so a straight shaft of sunlight will fill the hall on the morning of each September 11?

Pretty sure that was a myth that has been debunked.

Really, I thought it was highlighted in the Discovery show at one point? And is still mentioned in some articles.

I haven't read Eli Attia's studies, but from what I know the Millenium Hilton will cast shadows -at some moment- during the sun's movement from 8:46am to 10:28am but will not interrupt the light entering between the building and 22 Cortaldn Street (10:48), meaning that the shaft of light will indeed match with the longitudinal axis of the transit hall.

That's an awesome consideration in the design. I'll be there in a couple of years to enjoy it.

Still kinda reminds me of the fictious Caprica Stadium (from the show nobody watched..."Caprica")

I stuck with Caprica all the way, despite how godawful it was.

The absolute majesty of Battlestar Galactica kept me going...*must dig out my BG boxset*

I have some sun transit numbers, and there's a bit of luck involved with one building.
On Sept 11, the altitude (degrees above the horizon), and azimuth (degrees east of north) of the sun:

    08:46........24...........106
    09:03........27...........109
    10:28........41...........129

For reference, the Fulton St axis is 120 degrees.
The SE face of 2WTC is 105 degrees, so it lines up exactly with 08:46.

Besides the Millenium hotel, the only building that I think is high enough to block the sun is 8 Spruce St. It's hard to pinpoint on a map, but a line from the hub to the southernmost edge of the Gehry building is also 105 degrees, meaning the sun will pop out on cue at from behind the Gehry building 8:46.

    Wasn't it Atlas Staidum?

I read somewhere the VFX guys for BSG and Caprica based a lot of Cylon stuff off of Calatrava's work.
