The fact is that the Port Authority like all other non-private, government entities in the NY/NJ area are very wasteful. If they didn't spend the money on this, it would have been spent on other, possibly even less worthwhile projects.

At least with this, we have a beautiful station for generations.

Does anyone have the figure for the Calatrasaurus alone is costing to build? (apart from the infrastructure below)

Maybe we can get an idea by time.

Looking back in this thread, the work began in early 2010. So it's been four years.

This is how it looked at the end of 2011. No sign of the oculus.

It appeared in the first half of 2012, sort of. The below grade infrastructure work that outlines the oculus would have been done anyway.

And the Hub’s vaunted subway line connections could have been more efficiently achieved with a simple passageway than an “Oculus” longer and taller than Grand Central Terminal’s main hall.
They have that at Penn Sation, and at rush hour, people feel like shopping-mall sardines on Christmas Eve.

Will people really want to shop at expensive stores underground?
    They do at Rockefeller Plaza.

And they shopped like crazy at the original WTC underground mall -- at that time it was one of the most successful collection of shops in the country (subterranean or not).

Also, seeing as Conde Nast is the anchor tenant at 1WTC, I think it would be a very nice writeoff to host fashion shows in the oculus.

It's the Port Authority. Of course it's a colossal waste of money. But I would rather see my tax dollars wasted on useful infrastructure projects than on pointless foreign wars. Maybe this station could have been built for half the cost. But Lower Manhattan will still end up with a beautiful station that hopefully, like Grand Central, will be enjoyed a century from now. What did $4B get us in Iraq? A week of death and destruction? The Post should really redirect its fire. But of course it won't.

The Original Plan extended the LIRR from Atlantic to Fulton and allowed for a direct Rail Link to Lower Manhattan from JFK Airport. That is worth 4 billion...for some reason in this region even when they go for the cheaper option that costs far exceed those of the more expensive option.

Could you imagine if you could travel by rail from JFK to EWR, with the WTC as the hub? That sort of investment generates huge amounts of dividends for the entire region.

Yes. Currently it's a four seat ride via Jamaica station.

Two seat ride. E from WTC to Jamaica, then Airtrain from Jamaica to terminals.

The Port Authority claims to be working (sloooooowly) on a plan to extend the Path to Newark, which would make it a one-seat ride. As for the Air Train, there really is nothing I can say in its defense.

That plan will also cost billions of dollars which is almost criminal since it would just run along an existing ROW.

Schwarz, the topic was JFK to EWR. Please try to keep up with the thread.
