    Secant pile walls

This weekend, they blocked off the bikeway/walkway in front of the Wintergarden, so it looks like they're getting ready to dig in that area.

Zip, thanks for the link. Come to think of it, I have seen this technology used here in Houston. For some unknown reason, the enginers around here like to flaunt mother nature by sinking road underpases below grade, into the goo that this city is built on.
OK, so I assume that the drilling rig has inched it's way across West Street to install the vertical componants of the tunnel, thus leaving parallel scars on the surface of West street?

How are they going to structurally build the new terminal over the old one? Are they going to reuse the foundation and floors and just put up the new roof or is the terminal going to be torn up a bit at a time and redone from the ground up?

There is no existing terminal in the precise area where the Calatrava Hub / terminal will rise -- the original temporary entry to PATH (which sat on the Calatrava site and opened onto Church Street opposite St. Paul's Chapel) has been razed. The more recently opened entry to PATH at Greenwich / Vesey is also temporary. The actual PATH station is on the west side of Greenwich near Dey Street and will stay in the same place (west of the Calatrava Hub). Under the current plan most of the area above the PATH station is slated to be open space (the NE quadrant of the Memorial space).

The platforms will be used to support the cranes that will construct the new station above. A new platform will be added and one of the tracks reconfigured. Platforms and tracks will be shut down alternately as construction progresses.

Um, I meant to say platforms/mezzanine not "terminal" but thanks for the answers anyways.

I don't think so. The roadway has been curved toward the WFC, and right now they're working at both ends of the tunnel. I think the tunnel will be completed in these areas, and then the roadway shifted again to work on the middle.

In addition to excavating at both ends, now they are also working in the middle work zone building new secant walls for the second bridge of the underpass. Then the southbound lanes will shift onto it so they can build the third and final bridge where the SB lanes are currently.

Then lanes will shift again alternately over the new bridges and also in the areas of the two pedestrian bridge overpasses while new utilities are constructed. In the case of the Liberty St. bridge they're constructing a new bridge pier too.

Months ago while on the Vesey St bridge, I noticed a deep hole was dug at about the center of West St under the bridge.

At first it looked like a utility vault was being built, but why in the center. Is it a pier footing for a permanent pedestrian bridge?

That is a big telephone vault built coincidentally beneath the bridge - there are no plans to move the location of those piers.

Your description has jogged my memory. During the visit to the construction site with my son last july, we saw this giant drill bit while viewing the area from the Wintergarden. I had no idea what it was for, but thought it noteworthy enough to photograph. It now makes complete sense, the bit and the jig lying next to it....

Bit put into context of site...

You can also see the secant guide form in that first pic.

I noticed they've built some big wooden wall in front of part of the Wintergarden. What's the purpose for that? I might guess for more secant drilling but they've been sinking secant piles for nearly a year now over there, surely they must be done by now.

They blocked off half of the Wintergarden entrance and the bikeway. They're probably building the foundation for the headhouse connection to the Wintergarden.

    Yep.

The following information was last updated on February 20, 2009.
    • Excavation and site preparation in east bathtub
    • Demolition of the former temporary PATH station began in May 2008. Excavation is ongoing.
    • The new temporary PATH station is open at Vesey and West Broadway; its eastern wall is being modified to make room for Tower 2 construction. A crane will be used at the site in February 2009.
    • Excavating beneath and procuring steel for 1 train box underpinning
    • Long-lead procurements of elevator, escalator, and electrical equipment
    • Construction of the West Street pedestrian underpass (the "east-west connector") -- to link the WTC with Battery Park City's World Financial Center -- is active on the west side of the WTC site just south of the Freedom Tower and across West Street. Installation of 47 pre-cast arches ended in August 2008; roof structure now being installed.
    • East-west connector secant piles will be installed in first quarter 2009 across West Street
    • Excavation and headhouse construction outside the WFC's Winter Garden will re-route pedestrian and bicycle traffic from February 13 through March 13, 2009
