Here's a scary thought - I'm only 32 and distinctly remember when the subway cost 85 cents.

I remember a dollar, but I've only been here twenty years.

    At a 4% inflation rate, a twenty-year-old dollar was $2.19 in today's money.

Unless plans have changed, the Dey Sy passageway is a free zone.

I think that when this entire project is completed, they're going to want to croak people for every dime.

Might cost up to about $30.00 just to visit the Freedom Tower's obs deck!! I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

Those guys with the jackhammers were a nice alarm clock in the morning when I was there.

I feel really old now, I remember 45 cents a gallon gas and a roll of subway tokens was $5 (20 tokens).

as crowded as it was, the old sub-plaza sections of the trade center were a busy shopping area. as a resident of the area, I know we often went over to shop on the weekend. as far as just cutting through when it's raining. hey, you cut through when it's hot - A/C being a draw - and when it's cold - warmth is a plus.

I know during the winter we always used the trade center and bridge as a protected way to got to and from the movies weekends.

years before, my daughter was in day care in battery park city and we used the bridge to the winter garden every morning and evening - it's dangerous to try to cross the west side highway at street level.

I'm guessing many ferry riders will pass through when that's possible.

and finally, what the f*ck is wrong with having an inspiring public space as opposed to some minimalist, utilitarian, barely more than a staircase depressing little rat warren?

I totally agree with you, but the answer to your question is: Billions of Dollars.

When I was a teenager, gas prices were about 35 cents. Standard practice was that we kicked in a quarter each, and got a dollar's worth of gas. And for that, you also got your windshield cleaned.

Thinking about it thought, a quarter was a substantial amount of money. It got you a slice of pizza and a drink. Turns out that gas prices in the 60s would translate to about $2.25 today, adjusting for inflation.

Let's see, a bottle of Boons Farm Strawberry wine $1.90, a pack of Marlboro's $.65, a 3 pack of Trojans $1.45, actually getting her drunk enough to use the Trojans, PRICELESS !!!
