NEWARK — A house owned by Newark Mayor Cory Booker caught fire early Friday morning, just hours after the mayor delivered his sixth "State of the City" address.
Booker was trying to sell the three-story brick home on Court Street, which he had never occupied.
"We’re investigating a fire at that address," said Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. She declined to comment further.
Booker could not be reached for comment.
Friday morning, investigators from the prosecutor’s office were combing through the house, which sits across from the Krueger-Scott mansion in the city’s Central Ward. The structure still stood, but several windows were smashed out and black soot was caked around the windows and front door.
Booker purchased the home along with the one next to it in December 2009. He had planned to fix it up so he and his parents could eventually move in. When the renovations became too costly, Booker purchased another home on Longworth Avenue and was trying to sell the Court Street buildings.
Nick Pirro, of CPR Restoration and Cleaning Services, said he had already begun cleanup when officials arrived and told him to stop.
"They have to have investigators come in and clear the scene," Pirro said. "This way they can make sure the cause of origin."
Pirro said he did not know who called his office and told him to begin cleanup prematurely.
Law enforcement officials said the fire appeared to have been started by squatters, but a final determination has not been made.

LOL you actually believe that? It was abandoned and boarded up. Typical squatters got in and caused it. It's not the first empty property in that area to get burned down

I don't know what the hell that article is talking about. I see NO fire damaged building across from Krueger Mansion. Only the same brick walkups that have been boarded for months. No soot covered windows. In fact, there is NO trace of fire on any property. I just drove twice on Court street. Nothing. Stupid star ledger making a mount everest out of a sugar cube.

There is also some activity on Clay Street between McCarter Highway and the Passaic River - I believe at least one of the two sites is supposed to be a retail site (?).

Strange, isn't it? My guess is the boarded brick rowhouses along Court street on the northwest corner of court and MLKing blvd(aka High street)

McCarter/21 highway is retail, Springfield ave keeps changing fron Residential with retail to big box with a hotel (shot down by Society hill) .....I have no idea what the current construction is. Maybe someone has a link?

Pizzeria Worker Shot, Killed in Attempted Robbery

His wife pleaded for witnesses or anyone with information to go to police

Police are investigating a deadly attempted robbery at a Newark, N.J. pizzeria.
It happened at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday when the suspect walked into Golden Pizzeria and Grill at South Orange Avenue and South 11th Street and demanded money from the cashier, police said.
The victim, a 35-year worker at the family-owned pizzera, tried to intervene and was shot twice in the chest, police said. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital.
The victim was identified as 55-year-old Calvin Johnson, a father of six, according to his wife at the crime scene. His youngest child is 10 years old.
Johnson's wife, Nina Patton, was still in shock when she spoke to NBC New York Sunday morning.
"He is now down in the morgue and I have to go down there at 10:00 to identify his body and gather his personal belongings," Patton said, her voice breaking. "He was my friend for a long time."
"If anybody should see this and know any information of the young people who shot my husband... please, please call the police," she said.
There was no immediate description of the suspect from police, and it was not clear whether there was more than one person involved. Police are continuing to investigate.

Again why you will never see a target/walmart/kmart at Springfield ave site by Society hill... Home Depot partially works as its not a family orientated store, items are harder to steal and guards are armed at the front door.

    http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/201...za_chef_i.html

"Neighbors, local officials and others said Johnson’s killing was part of the ongoing violence in the West Ward neighborhood, which included the armed robbery of a shoe store across the street last week, and the Jan. 17 shooting death, also during a hold-up, of a bodega owner few blocks away. In that case, a 16-year-old was arrested in the death of Miguel Torres Peralta, 37, at the JNC MiniMart at 14th Avenue and 18th Street."

I can't imagine armed robberies going on anywhere near here. To put in context where this TARGET store is located click below:[Minneapolis] (NOTE the skyway there is due to temperature hitting -10 degrees in winter... not to shield people away from the hood like in Newark)

    Rightttt....

The West Ward is not the same as the Central Ward....The Target store and Mall @ Atlantic Terminal are right down the street from Crown Heights and East NY , yet no real problems there , nor at the South Bronx Target...... Your making a mountain out of a mole hill once again....your just as bad as Star Ledger , which seems to be driving the Reverse Racism in Newark and Hatred towards Cory Booker....SMH

Society Hill has 4 square/trapezoid blocks of nothing. Across Springfield Avenue, along court and prince street, there's nothing but vacant lots and a neglected playground.
That's enough to create a dense comminity. That's a large enough area to positively influence the sorrounding area. As opposed to random construction that gets drowned out by surrounding ghetto areas.
Id say at least line Jones Street( aka Norfolk st/clifton ave/Irvine turner blvd) as well as Springfield avenue with 5 story apartments with sidewalk retail. The interior streets can be lined with the fancier bayonne type homes (no, not the "bad"bayonne boxes)

And make them with a retro victorian brick facade,or a latin look.
