Also, I happened by the museum and it looks like they're building the expansion. Is this pre-work or is it full steam ahead? I thought it was on hold...?

So I hear they might be building a large scale TOD near the Grove Street LRT and Watesseeing Ave station....and there demolishing the Warehouse next to the Parkway....so i guess something large is going to replace that. I would really wise NJT would finish up their Essex County LRT studies.... The Ridership is there , I would like construction to begin later this decade.

More property tax paying private property converted to public non revenue property! (Does the museum pay property taxes?) I suspect not.

Prudential gets approval for demolition on Broad Street in Newark

Architectural renderings of Prudential's planned office towers on Broad Street in Newark.

The Newark Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission last night voted unanimously to allow Prudential to tear down several historic buildings on Broad Street to make way for a new office complex.
Ulana Zakalak, Prudential’s historic preservation consultant, told the commission the buildings on the two blocks between Cedar and New streets are “too deteriorated for any other use than demolition.”
The buildings on the Newark historic registrar slated to come down include the Wm. V Snyder Dry Goods Store, which became a Valu Plus shop, S. Klein on the Square and Schraft’s.
Zakalak said because of their condition, these buildings “have lost their historical context. They are no longer architecturally historic.”
After four hours of presentations and discussion, the commission approved the demolition with the proviso several items be salvaged for preservation, including the S. Klein sign above the store entrance.
It also recommended the sign be incorporated into the design of the new building. That and other recommendations will be taken up by the city planning board on Monday.
Prudential wants to build a 20-story, 313-foot office tower on Broad Street between New and West Park streets. The block to the south between Cedar and West Park streets would be transformed into a small parking lot and open space.
Plans call for construction to begin in the fall, with completion expected in 2014. The estimated cost of the single tower is $444 million.
Prudential also has presented plans for a second building to be constructed some time in the future on the open-space site. The second tower would be 21 stories and 370 feet tall, according to renderings by the architectural firm Kohn Pederesen Fox Associates.

You're assuming the properties were paying taxes to begin with. Could have been a city owned or abandoned lot already.

As the article reads "The buildings on the Newark historic registrar slated to come down include the Wm. V Snyder Dry Goods Store, which became a Valu Plus shop, S. Klein on the Square and Schraft’s."

Basically anything between Cedar and Park Sts. About time too.

I walked by it, and still doing it for years. A Italian american Pizzeria occupied the corner. The rest housed Newark's hot dog vendors's carts and food supplies. Three residential homes were razed in the late 1990s along Central Avenue to accommodate the parking lot expansion nd what was then the "new" entrance.

Bye Bye old McCrory's? I remember cutting thru every afternoon in 1992 after school to get a slice of the pizza inside and at "queens" around the back.

To exit Mc Crorys from behind,(Halsey st) one had to go down to the basement level(toys& Furniture, and kids wear) and exit up a fight of steps leading to Halsey Street. Just before going up the rear steps, were a bunch of condemned doors that led into the wall. I wondered as a kid, why was there such a huge closed entranceway? Years later, snooping around with my friends, I accidently came upon the abandoned Cedar Street Subway, walked it with flashlights, and discovered MCCrory had a station it shared with "Kresges Mart",complete with mannequins and sale signs from the 40's! I learned three things....Those doors led to McCrory station for westbound passengers. Kresges Mart aka "two Guys" was.....KMART! And we had discovered the old Public service trolley terminal feed tunnel. It abruptly dead ended at the PSEG plaza. I hope the old cedar street subway station isn't destroyed if the McCrory building goes down......just reminiscing.

Transit-oriented development , its basically a development built around a Rail line , Transitway or station. Sometimes Developers build before the lines are even constructed leaving space for them , the development usually peoples cars second over transit , walking , and biking. Harrison , Downtown Rahway , Downtown South Amboy , Perth Amboy , Downtown New Brunswick all have examples of TOD.
