Thumbs up Shaq Announces $150M in Financing for 35-Story Newark Tower

The second Shaq Tower will rise at 777 McCarter Highway, between Ironside Newark and 2 Gateway, at the site that Boraie Development has been advertising a potential office tower for a few years.

    From WBGO:

"O’Neil announced he’ll financially back another apartment project at 777 McCarter Highway near 2 Gateway Center.

“Three-hundred and fifty units, thirty-five stories. We’re going to be investing another $150 million in the city,” O’Neal said. “This will be known as the ‘House That Shaq Built’."

Edit: More on Shaq Tower below. Goldman Sachs has also committed to financing it, and I'm sure that Murphy will make sure they get whatever state financing is necessary:

Any X's spraypainted on it? I hope they demo it to make way for another tower. It would be such a waste of transit-oriented land to just repurpose that building.

Not a fan of 1960s architecture at all, but... Kislak building is (historically) protected, no?

Nope. Google Maps is mistaken in this case.

It's between Market and Edison Place along McCarter Highway.

Yeah it's wrong when you type in the address in the search bar but when you adjust in the street view it eventually points to the right spot.

From what the media has reported, it sounds like they are aiming to break ground next year. The rendering on the fence is of the formerly proposed office tower.

An LA Fitness health club is coming to Newark’s West Ward under a development deal that recently obtained land-use approvals, real estate investment firm JJ Operating Inc. announced Monday.

JJ Operating said in a news release it has obtained the go-ahead to put the health club in a vacant former Pathmark property at 237-249 South Orange Ave., it said in a news release.

“With our formal approvals in place, we are now able to move full speed ahead with construction to kick off the redevelopment projects,” Jack J. Jemal, partner in New York-based JJ Operating, said in a prepared statement. “We are excited to bring LA Fitness, a first-class health club, to the market, with occupancy scheduled for late 2018.”

LA Fitness will be the anchor tenant at the long-vacant property, which will also house smaller retailers, JJ Operating said.

Lisa John-Basta of Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi P.C. represented JJ Operating in securing the land-use approvals. Michael Horne of CBRErepresented the tenant in the lease transaction.
