Default 34 East 51st St - Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

    First came this in 1922...

Then it was renovated into this...

Banco di Roma bought the building in 1993:

Tse Yang restaurant was on the ground floor.

This is a conceptual design by SHCA

    SOM design is probably different.

Permit issued for building on March 8:

Schedule A shows it will be 21-story office building with an eating and drinking establishment on the ground floor:

The website has been registered (34east51st.com) but isn't live yet:

It may turn out better than the rendering suggests. I'm open-minded.

As EM said, that rendering was produced by a firm who is no longer designing the project. SOM is designing it, so we can probably expect a modern clean box clad in either blue or green glass.

    Thanks for that overview EastMillinocket.

Thanks for the compliments. We'll probably get a better sense of what's going to be here once their website is up and running.

This is a bit of an odd-ball for Midtown - once it gets going, it will be one of the few office buildings under construction, as well as a rare mid-block not designed by Gene Kaufman.

I think the combination makes it rarer, as there are a number of office buildings (GEM Tower, 7 Bryant Park, Coach Tower, Korean Cultural Center), a number of midblocks (One57, aforementioned GEM Tower, Variety of smaller residential bits and bobs), and a longer list of non-Kaufmans. 21 stories is not particularly tall, though, even for 34th st, so I don't think this will make much of an impact.
