Thread: Bunker-like tower at the UN?

  1. #1

Default Bunker-like tower at the UN?

Across the street from the UN is this glassy triple lobed building; before it stands a concrete box whose few windows progressively get larger the higher they go.

    It looks positively Orwellian.

What's the deal here? Is this some sinister airtight security building? NBC protected? Bombproof? Filled with heavily armed & extremely hostile men?

    If so, how cool!

It's even artfully airbrushed out of most pictures of the complex. This is all I could find.

That's the US mission to the UN, you can find more about it here:

The building was designed following 9/11 when total paranoia fueled the entire Bush agenda towards the UN and hence we get this piece of shit. It's not photoshopped out of the pictures, it's just very recent - though in all honesty it should be.

I like the architecture; a very sleek looking, simple, highly refined design. The concrete facade on this building is so dense and highly polished that it looks as good as precast stone panels. The best thing though is that clearly no expense was spared in the construction: this is an exquisitely crafted building.

Gwathmy Siegal is one firm that rarely disappoints, me anyway, IMHO a fine work af architecture; particularly give the 'high security' program requirements than needed to be met in constructing this tower.
