Thread: World Trade Center Nomenclature

    Default World Trade Center Nomenclature

I apologize if this isn't the appropriate section for this thread, but I figured that the skyscraper enthusiasts would be the most interested in this topic.

As many of us know, the World Trade Center has been having identity issues for well over a decade now. A lot of this confusion likely arises from inconsistent news reports and rumors, which continue to evolve (or mutate) as time goes by. I would like to here outline what I think are the most appropriate–and most egregious–titles for the complex, and I encourage all of you to state your preferences as well, so that I may get a better idea of what those involved in the NYC skyscraper culture think.

    Most agreeable but partially unofficial:

+ The World Trade Center (complex)
    - 1 World Trade Center (west tower)
    - 2 World Trade Center (east tower)
    - 3 World Trade Center
    - 4 World Trade Center
    - 5 World Trade Center
    (Vista or Marriott Hotel)
    - 6 World Trade Center (Performing Arts Center)
    - 7 World Trade Center
    -
WTC Transit Hub & The Mall at The World Trade Center (or Westfield Shoppingtown WTC)
    - Memorial Plaza & Museum

    - Vehicle Security Center & Liberty Park (including St. Nicholas Church)

    Seemingly official:

+ The World Trade Center (site)
    - One World Trade Center
    - 2 World Trade Center
    - 3 World Trade Center
    - 4 World Trade Center
    - Tower 5 (hotel/condo)
    - Performing Arts Center
    - 7 World Trade Center
    - WTC Transportation Hub & Westfield World Trade Center
    - National September 11 Memorial & Museum
    - Vehicle Security Center & Liberty Park (including St. Nicholas Church)

    Least agreeable and partially unofficial:

    + Freedom Tower
    + 200 Greenwich Street
    + 175 Greenwich Street
    + 150 Greenwich Street
    + 130 Liberty Street

    + Performing Arts Center
    + 7 World Trade Center
    + WTC Transportation Hub
    + Ground Zero
+ Vehicle Security Center & Liberty Park (including St. Nicholas Church)

Yes, a lot of these differences are semantic, but I nonetheless believe that they carry strong implications for whether this site/complex will be primarily a place of pride and joy, or otherwise a place of grief and pity. Needless to say, I strongly encourage the former.

The addresses are valid names, aside from 1 World Trade, which doesn't appear to have a street address, just the vanity address.

I highly doubt there will ever be a performing arts center on site. Not at least for 20 years.

The way the complex is designed, you really can't separate the transit hub from the mall. The Calatrava hub will act alot like the main atrium of the mall, as will the transit corridors, which will be lined with shops.

Drilling and foundation work is being done at PAC area; whatever the final design is selected, it needs to fit to the current structural path.
