Some Proposals for various Infill Stations and Station expansions

    Metro North
    Waterbury Branch

Waterbury Station Expansion Plans , Justified in my opinion if service was extended up to Torrington and Hartford and the bus network was beefed. Its not funded yet and probably won't gain traction intill the Waterbury Branch upgrades are completed and ridership explodes along with those 2 expansions.

    http://www.ct.gov/ecd/lib/ecd/2009-0...ting_final.pdf

Devon Station , the permanent station would anchor the Waterbury Branch and allow for more service to be added without taking up main Line slots. A temporary station opened up recently for nearby track and bridge work.

Inspector General report comes down hard on Metro North
By Rebecca Harshbarger, Bob Fredericks and Georgett Roberts

Metro-North maintenance crews — responsible for making sure crucial switches and signals are operating properly — get little or no supervision, do not document their work, and are sometimes not even given assignments, according to a report from the MTA’s Inspector General.

Delays ahead on major Valley road

    Michael P. Mayko
    Updated 5:56 am, Wednesday, April 22, 2015

DERBY -- If the delays on the Route 34 bridge crossing into downtown haven't gotten you down yet -- get ready to get on the bus.

Now the section of Division Street where Metro-North's Waterbury branch runs will be closed for at least a week beginning Friday as a new railroad crossing signal is installed and old track removed.

"The average daily traffic on Division Street in the vicinity of the rail crossing is approximately 21,400 vehicles per day," said Stephen P. Curley, a DOT engineer.

shuttled by bus to Bridgeport from Sunday to May 3, said Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders.

NJ Transit turns to Canada for a loan

By Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
    on April 24, 2015 at 4:35 PM, updated April 24, 2015 at 4:37 PM

NJ Transit is turning to Canada instead of the ailing state Transportation Trust Fund, for a $300 million loan to bridge the gap between paying for work covered by a federal grant and actually receiving the money.

"This would authorize NJ Transit to obtain a line of credit," said Kathleen Sharman NJ Transit Chief Financial Officer. "It would be used to pay for preventative maintenance expenses eligible to be reimbursed by federal funds."

Metro-North opening temporary rail station in Milford
    Frank Juliano
    Updated 5:34 pm, Saturday, April 25, 2015

In preparation for work to begin on the Devon Bridge, Metro North workers construct a temporary train platform for passenger transfers between the Waterbury and New Haven lines in the Devon section of Milford, Conn. on Thursday, April 23, 2015. Photo: Brian A. Pounds

MILFORD -- Metro-North Railroad's temporary Devon station, which will be in use from May 4 into early October, is exactly that: temporary.

The open-air platform sits at the Y-shaped junction of tracks where the Waterbury Branch meets the main New Haven Line. There's no canopy, no restrooms, no ticket machines and no parking.

The state's Rail Transportation Plan, covering 2012-16, mentions a permanent Metro-North station in Devon, but this is not it.

But the two, four-car-length platforms -- one on the branch and one on Track 3 with a walkway connecting them -- are a key piece of a major upgrade to the Waterbury Branch.

Note that the Proposed Permanent Station which is part of the Waterbury Branch upgrade will not be located on the Wye but few hundred feet east of it.

    Metro-North ridership reaches record 85M

    Hoa Nguyen, htnguyen@lohud.com 7:17 p.m. EDT April 27, 2015

Increasing numbers of Westchester County residents commuting to Connecticut and Bronx residents traveling to Westchester helped propel Metro-North Railroad’s ridership to record levels last year, officials said.

About 84.7 million passengers rode Metro-North in 2014, solidifying its position as the country’s second busiest passenger rail carrier in the country, second only to Long Island Rail Road, which had about 86 million riders, the MTA reported. Metro-North’s last record was in 2008 when ridership reached 83.6 million.

A 3-Part Plan to Rebuild New York's Old Penn Station

    May 4th, 2015

    By ERIC JAFFE

Richard Cameron and James Grimes of the architecture and design firm Atelier & Co., in Brooklyn, have developed a plan to rebuild New York City's old Penn Station in all its former glory.

    - A rebuilt Penn Station would give New York back its monumental gateway of which it was robbed in 1963. Today’s train passengers are required to navigate a depressing warren of gloomy passages instead of passing through McKim’s sequence of inspiring vaulted spaces.

    - The first task of a Rebuilt Penn Station would be … rebuilding Penn Station. Labine points to 353 original McKim Mead & White drawings in the archives of the New York Historical Society to "jump-start the design process." There are also plenty of other photographs that capture the 84 Doric columns, and the spacious concourse and its glass canopy, and the vaulted ceiling of the marble waiting room that Labine writes "never failed to impress and uplift anyone who entered."
