Didn't Edward die in a car accident a few years ago? I believe this site has been operating on autopilot for a while now.

Where did you get that macabre info from?! (surly you jest)
...auto pilot wouldn't pay the bills to keep this place open

besides a quick check on his status shows:

I must have been thinking of someone else.

He also updated his website today with photos of his vases - so he's alive. Phew.

What bills are required to keep this site running? How does this site even make money?

You would've been thinking of TLOZ Link5, EastMillinocket.

I doubt that Edward runs this site as a money-making exercise.

TLOZ was before my time. I hope Zippy and lofter haven't suffered similar fates.

Not a money making exercise but...
Domain names (like wirednewyork.c0m) aren't free, and one has to pay annual fees to keep them up.
So for this site to remain up for "years", someone has to be paying those renewal fees.

Some websites like Skyscrapercity cost over 100k to run a year , half of that is 2/3 are paid with ad revenue and the rest is from the owners pocket... Some smaller cost 6k to run...so id imagine WNY is between 10 & 20k...a year...

Domain names are cheap...around 10$ a year... Servers are the more expensive part of running a website...

I purpose merging this site in with Skyscrapercity (SSC) , it seems the site is on life support lately and it would be a shame too lose 13 years of NYC redevelopment history... SSC North America is currently being overhauled for the first time in 10 yrs.. SSC New York & Chicago are the first major sections to get the tuneup treatment...

The New NYC Layout , separate sections for each borough and the suburbs

    Manhattan
    Brooklyn
    Queens
    The Bronx
    Staten Island
NYC Suburbs (Long Island & Hudson Valley)
    Fairfield County
    World Trade Center
The Top of the World Bar (Skybar)
Redirect link to New Jersey , Northeast & Upstate NY sections

Long Term plans include a possible merge with SSP and Archboston...

    The North American Forum

    Main Sections

    Urban Discussions
    Photos of North America
Transportation ( more discussion , less photos) , Photo heavy posts would be encouraged in the world section
Current Events (Not visible from the main page)
Skybar (Not visible from the main page)

Layout viewed from the Main page

United States : Major Cities : Balt / Wash DC | Chicago | Miami | Los Angeles | New York City | San Francisco Bay Area | Seattle | Tampa Bay Area | Indianapolis | Atlanta | Boston | Milwaukee | Minneapolis | Pittsburgh | Philadelphia | Denver | Albuquerque | Nashville | Boise | New Orleans

Its under discussion... The NYC and Chicago overhaul will happen very soon... Some of the other Newer sections should be put into place by December and the rest by next Summer.... But its not the Final plan...
