    Default Anchor Glass factory Redevelopment- Aberdeen, NJ

    The former Anchor Glass Factory in Aberdeen, NJ (Monmouth County) is going to be transformed into 500 townhouses and apartments, 75,000 sqft of retail, 110-room boutique hotel and a movie theater. $200-250 million project by Somerset Development.

    Those idiots should retain the main buildings of the factory as part of the development. For many reasons, people actually like the look of old industrial buildings. It gives a unique difference from generic suburban condos. I almost guarantee they will demolish every inch of the factory to change the site to a residential utopia.

    The ordinary warehouse portion can be removed as there is nothing special about it, but the portion closest to the tracks with the pointed roofs and the two tall brick chimneys should be retained. \

    I strongly believe that this will fail miserably at becoming an urban town center as intended. Washington Town Center in Robbinsville is on similar design, and fails in that every store has a rear entrance to the rear parking. Almost every store uses the rear entrance, a single three foot wide glass door, as the primary entrance and most have blocked their main entrances. As a result, the street facing portion is always vacant of activity, save for a single restaurant with outdoor seating on the corner. This plan at least saves the chimneys, as seen on the rendering in a 2012 APP article. They can be seen in that site plan along the tracks in a park, although only 3 of the 4 will be retained.

    The rowhouse portion might look halfway decent though.
