I would also add that when it is snowing at night (as it is right now), the sky glow of Manhattan is greatly amplified, and skyscrapers are at their most mysterious.
Most people enjoy a good snow storm, but when you're in a big city, cold and wet, and have to get around, it can be a living hell.
But there's also that unique excitment during a snowstorm in New York. Maybe because the transformation is so extreme: the sounds are muffled, the crowds are gone, the grime is buried beneath.
And people also seem to become transformed as often happens during any "crisis"; the every day urban guard comes down and the small town friendliness comes out. Take a walk through the unusually quiet streets to a local tavern and hunker down with the locals and strangers for the long haul during a snow storm. All I can say is...what a blast.

Mostly I think it blows
I took my dogs for a walk in Central Park tonight. Getting to the park was messy, but once in the park it's peaceful and pleasant, the sky pink and the snow is such a rare occasion in New York.

I am scared to go into Central Park after dark, Edward -- but I imagine you can get a lot of good pictures there, especially in the snow. *I was thinking of doing the carriage ride and getting the guy to stop periodically ...
I tried for the first time putting my camera in a plastic bag, cutting a hole for the lens, and went out to see what I could get. *Unfortunately the bag had printing on it and it was hard to see what button I was pressing, so I have a lot of shots of my feet. *But there were some good ones too:

Great shots, Rube. *Although I don't know why you are afraid of going to the park at night, especially during the snowstorm, when the visibility for any potential criminal is near zero.
Thanks, Eugenius!
I guess the muggers probably stay home during snowstorms ...
I love seeing pictures of New York in a snowstorm.*From what I understand, NY does not get very much snow annualy, so it is not really a frequent event. It is pretty to look at though! *(According to popular entertainmet New York and London receive deep snow every Dec. 24th). *

Another excellent snow storm! Washington Square Park was packed all day and night yesterday with people and dogs playing in the snow. Lots of buried cars, lots of stuck cars. You could walk right down the middle of Broadway since there was so little traffic, and it was somewhat plowed. The bars in my neighborhood did very well yesterday - what a blast!
Im writing this from Palm Springs, CA. Good timing, good luck I suppose...
We were driving home from Boston and had to pull over and get a hotel because we couldn't see a foot in front of us. Got stuck on the exit ramp but managed to get off. The only hotel there was a Hilton. I don't want to know what the price was.
I just finished shoveling out the steps and a bit of the front of the house and the snow around the house is 1-2 feet deep. There's a 7-8 foot drift blocking the driveway
I'd like to add my suburban perspective. *I had a blast yesterday because the suburbs just completely shut down. *My car is just barely peeking out of a snow drift, so I walk wherever I have to go -- what was before a mundane walk is now a trek through a winter wonderland. *I'm well provisioned, and I have some good company, so let it snow. *
Let it snow let it snow let it SNO-O-OW!

Subways tunnels were sloppy, but service continued with only minor disruptions on most lines.
Again, it is DUMPING outside!
