New strategy to build biotech parks

New York City is working with out-of-town developers, including Lyme Properties of Cambridge, Mass., to create research parks to spur biotech and other pharmaceutical and medical operations in the city.

The parks could be created around areas where there is an opportunity in research, such as neuroscience, says Andrew Alper, president of the city’s Economic Development Corp.

The plan represents a shift in strategy for biotech supporters, who had been seeking large government subsidies for a major, 1 million-square-foot facility. It comes at a time when New York-area biotech companies are on the verge of a breakthrough with 20 drugs in final Phase III trials or awaiting Food and Drug Administration approval.

the originalidea was to build this in the area just north of the South street Seaport, but Community Board 1, as alwyas protested any commercial growth in Lower Manhattan and one a bill which saved those old buildings as landmarks.

As of ye there is no new location for this to happen

Makes sense. It's right next to Bellevue.

The east river one was to be built by, or with, NYU. I hope this still goes thhrogh. Also, MSK was ralking about building one in Queens West, maybe it'll be part of the Queens Port development there.

This is so important to NY's future, I hope it gets pushed through. Really would like to know about this "new" idea, though. Maybe suburban-style parks in outer boroughs, replacing underused industrial area? Undeveloped land? I know there's an RFP out for 22 acres in the College Point Corporate Park. This would be perfect for that. We'll see. It's good to see them speaking with experienced developers - there's a lot of biotech going on in Beantown.
