Thread: 8 Spruce Street - Beekman Tower - by Frank Gehry

I'm going to go out on a limb here...

If cutbacks and cost-conciousness are going to be major influences on a project, It makes me that much more grateful to have a legitimate architect involved. I predict Gehry will produce something worthwhile.

Older versions show a wavy structure with an undulating facade.
    ...but newer versions...um...don't.

“But the way Gehry designed it, no two floor plates were the same,” Rosenbloom said at a Community Board 1 Quality of Life Committee meeting. That means that workers would have to build new molds for each floor, substantially drawing out the construction.

To cut the costs and lengthy schedule of this process, Ratner is simplifying the design, Rosenbloom said.
Oh no! That can't be good.

Boxy might be what we'll end up with, unfortunately.

    Hi, man.

Aren't you involved in the construction industry?

If so, have you seen the design and what's your opinion?

Baumgarten said Monday that the design would be unveiled in four to six weeks.
This will place the unveiling date somewhere between April 28th and May 12th, for those of you wondering.

The crane is working today. I hadn't seen it move since it was put up...

Yes I am, but no I haven't. I am preparing myself for a watered down design based on 1) living in New York, and 2) snippets from the article:

This tightening... availability of capital... caused us to delay construction of Beekman.”

..workers would have to build new molds for each floor, substantially drawing out the construction.

To cut the costs and lengthy schedule of this process, Ratner is simplifying the design.

Baumgarten said Monday that the design would be unveiled in four to six weeks. She said the design is complete but she could not comment on it. Older versions show a wavy structure with an undulating facade.

Unlike the design for the rest of the tower, the design for the school is final.

If you've seen the post-simplified design and it still has an undulating facade, that's good news. My statement was pure speculation based on the article; what was expensive and causing a drawn out construction was, in part, that no two floors were the same, and now they have simplified it.

They may have somewhat made it more repetative but it still undulates, maybe now there will be some kind of repetition which would save alot of cash.

would love to see it skinnier as a result - the few early conceptual renderings seemed a bit awkwardly fat to me - but what do i know.

alonzo, you've seen the very final-final, after-all-the-cost-cutting version?

Tell us what it looks like: the shape, the color, texture, crowns (if any), etc.

Unfortunately I havent seen the whole building. Even my contact hasnt. These final renderings are being held very close to Gehry's chest. What Ive seen is a two story mock up of the facade. As expected its sheethed in metal and undulates with punched windows. Much like his buildings in dusseldorf, the second of the only two designs gehry is capable of. Expect a 75 story version of this. The only things we can speculate on are setbacks and massing but the facade is standard gehry cut and paste from what ive seen. Id much prefer something like his NYTimes and Astor Place proposals personally.

So which one of these looks closest to the one you saw, surface-wise?
