Although no renderings have been released, it is likely that the top will taper gradually and that, unlike the uptown Trump World Tower, the upper floors won't be the same size as the lower ones.
That is nice to hear. Although what is up with these renderings.

Finally some real news! Judging by the months of eerie silence, I was fearing that this project would go down the same path as 80 South Street.

The height listed on the DOB website of 876' probably isn't to the top of the building. It's probably to the top floor, omitting mechanical bulkheads, crowns, spires, etc..

these renderings—which, it must be noted, are from Fall 2004 and could well have evolved since then

    Yep, definitely Gehry.

On a side note, is the neighborhood really that lacking in highrise buildings? This thing will stick out like a sore thumb if you're coming in from Brooklyn.

That's a good thing. "Thumbs" sticking out are what enliven a skyline.

This "thumb" look like it belongs to David Blaine (after the week in the tank 'course).

I HATE this guy's work. Does everything he does have to look like some dead thing wrapped in newspaper or a wax buidling melting in the desert heat? This one is the worst of all. From the distance in these renderings it looks vaguely like an attachment bought in one of those 'couples welcome' stores on the edge of Times Square.

I hope the design has improved since 04. Those renderings look like a bad imitation of Gehry's style. The base is bad and the tower's form is weak. Personally, I wish Gehry would stick to low or mid-rise buildings. Aside from his NY Times proposal, I haven't liked any of his skyscraper designs.

    Miss Brooklyn's Father? Gehry's become a one-trick pony.
