Isn't that better? Why would you want setbacks? They would just expose an unattractive wall of the older building.
I'd take the "older building" over the new one, any day of the week.
The set-backs seem to be designed in a very respectful manner toward Bush Tower. They leave all the setback and crown detail on Bush unobstructed. I don't love the building, but I appreciate that they did that.
I would have liked to see something that compliments the Bush Tower. the building looks pretty good, but I wonder how it would have been if they used brick to compliment it's surrounding buildings.
The Bush building is so spectacular and unique that either you build a work of art next to it ...or you bow out with something that fades into the background ...or something that´s intellegently contextual.
The first design proposal shows a banal mish-mash of set-backs with a crown of horizontal stripes.... contrast is wonderful in skilled hands...but this is a clash....at odds with both of it´s neighbors but offering nothing compelling on it´s own. Imagine something like the LVMH tower here....something along those lines.... that kind of skill and creativity would´ve been cool and worthy of sitting between these two buildings and being on 42nd street.
But if we can´t have that .... at least the revised version defers to the Bush....somewhat the way the addition to the old General Electric building on Madison does.
Old GE building on Madison? GE was based on Lexington ave ? where on Madison did they have offices? cant believe i dont know this.

That's actually a great example, but this one would need to be a building that transitions well between the Knickerbocker and Bush.
The first scheme made a weak gesture toward Knickerbocker. The second does quite well by Bush but ignores Knickerbocker entirely.
I figured why not do a little investigation on this and try to find out why, when market is hot, they are not moving on this job. talked to a source at GS, they havent touched this project in 6 months. Also went into the Bush tower and asked some of the people in the kiosks, they are not aware of there leasing being up anytime soon or the threat of being kicked out.
