The underground areas of the memorial are going to be larger than the lobbies of the former towers, and that's even counting the elevators banks.

There will be plenty of space, too much in fact IMO.

There will be two seperate Memorial Components at the site. One will be the memorial which will have the pools and names below ground. The other is the Memorial Museum. It has more details and room for exhibits, but it is also very Memorial like. It will have the box beam columns.

I believe access to the container of remains (symbolic and the actual room with remains) will be through the memorial museum. The memorial museum will be seperate from the waterfalls, so I assume they will be able to sound proof it. The memorial will probably always echo with the falls, although I'll have to review the diagrams again. Sometimes quiet comes from not being able to hear other people talk. It'll be a white noise kind of quite.

Based on my viewing of the traffic on Church Street, the crowds are always around the posters with the events of 9/11. The names don't really attract that many people. More accurately, I suspect that everyone goes by the names, but they don't stop for long. If the Memorial is not "experiential", giving people something more than a place to look at the names, tourists may not linger for long.

Try the view from the giant glass wall in the Winter Garden at the top of the marble staircase. Or the view from any of the windows of the Freedom Tower. Or from the building that will replace the DB building. Or from any of the office buildings Silverstein plans to put up along CHurch Street. Did you forget that the site will be surrounded by tall towers with big windows?? A hot air balloon will hardly be necessary to see an overhead veiw of the memorial.

There could also be public space between towers 3 & 4 to overview the memorial from the 3rd floor (or higher). There could have been a cultural space on the NE corner of the 8 acre memorial which would have provided a great above ground place for viewing the memorial. But the same people who want an above ground memorial now, wanted nothing above ground anywhere near the memorial a few months ago. As far as I'm concerned, those who are complaining have already made their choices and it's time for them to live with the results of their past demands.

After the press conference announcing Silverstein's acceptance of the lease renegotiation, I walked off to the side and sat on the public benches in the WTC 7 mini park. The fountain came on. It reminded me of sitting on the benches by the old WTC fountain. With the green, the stones, and the water; looking out over the 16 acre emptiness; DB in front and the ruined school building behind; I found the best place we've had in 4 years to sit in a peaceful surroundings and reflect on the past. That place happens not to be on the footprints. It doesn't need pages of requirements. It's there without benefit of a contest or mounds of public response. It's there for the taking. And chances are that very few people will go there because it didn't cost enough, wasn't dedicated for the purpose, and because it wasn't part of anyone's agenda.

Which is for me, precisely why it is so effective as a place of contemplation.

No matter where one might get to view RA (if it actually ever gets funded and built) it won't look like that computer rendering, especially the water falls.

There's something about that name, not only the way it rolls off the tongue, but how it looks in print, "Burlingame", unlike "Dykstra" that has those short hard vowels.
