Default 85 West Broadway / 128 Chambers Street

A site has been cleared and excavation has begun on the SE corner of West Broadway / Chambers Street.

This 3-story building used to sit on that site:
128 Chambers St.: Non-working doorway clock

    Photo: (C) Tom Bernardin, 2000
A google search of the addresses above turns up no info for a new project.

DOB shows that a DEMOLITION Permit to tear down the existing 3-story building was issued on 7.21.2006

DOB shows an APPLICATION for a NEW BUILDING ( Job #104472660 ) was submitted on 6.23.2006 (DISAPPROVED on 8.17.2006):
    PROPOSED: J-1 - RESIDENTIAL (HOTELS)

Architect: Brennan Beer Gorman Architects ( http://www.bbg-bbgm.com/ )

    Height: 135

    Floors: 13

Gross Square Feet: 92,647 Sq. Ft.

    Units: 114
The bbg-bbgm website shows many "Hospitality" (Hotel) projects including the NYC Sofitel in midtown, the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City, The Peninsula Bangkok, Turning Stone Casino Resort, the Mandarin Oriental Washington D.C. and some large resort hotels in China.

A PERMIT to Excavate the site was issued on 9.21.2006:
Excavation/Foundation filing in conjunction with New Building Application 104472660. Also filing for construction fence not to exceed 3' from property line. No change in use, egress, or occupancy.

I work near there and witnessed the demolition. I had hoped that the new tower would have incorporated the base which was quite nice. Que sera.

There is a website ( http://www.hotelazure.com/ ) ... which states "Summer 2006". It seems that the Hotel Azure will not make that projected opening date.

2-1/2 months later and this one still isn't open. Here's how she looks ...

That one-story brick thing to the right of the hotel needs to go, badly.

    FloMa Accepts the Challenge

Friday, October 27, 2006, by Joey

Well, it's not Greenpoint, but it's impressive nonetheless. Shattering Will Femia's record of four under-construction developments in one frame, a tipster sends the above along, with footnotes:
From my office window facing W 28th Street I can see 6 projects under construction, but only 5 will fit into photo frame - at an angle... (5 still beats 4) [Ed.— Talking smack!]
    1. Is actually on W 29th ST
    2. on W 28th ST.
    3. on W 28th ST - looks like it has 2 penthouse apartments - 1 with a duplex.
    4. You can just make out the construction barrier in front of the hole
where a building was demo'd on 27th Street
    5. Site of Remy 101 W 27 ST
Yes, very impressive. And, just for giggles, a bonus observation: "I wonder what's going to happen to the wholesale flower 'district' One of the owners of Paradise Plants on W 28th said the mass relocation was a 'just a rumor' that had been tossed around for years and he had no plans to relocate. New residents with dogs will have the happiest canines in town - it's like having a backyard in your front yard with real trees and grass and plants."

Looks like they're now punching out some itty-bitty squares (windows??) on the formerly blank east facade of this one ...

so, do you think those punch-outs are windows or just surface design (2 weeks ago that was a solid styrafoam wall)?
