At the highest point (at the west side of the building near the West Side Hiway) it will be about as tall as the old Manhattan Refrigerating Company building (now West Coast Apartments) across Gansevoort to the south.

DEMO of the old Gansevoort Pumping Station / Prime Veal building at the corner of Tenth / Gansevoort has started.

This will be a great project. I hope that the crappy Interstate Foods buildings, which are adjacent to this on the north side, will be razed. I also hope that the beautiful torqued tower is built in a form largely similar to what was proposed.

If the Interstate buildings go down you can bet that something 150' tall will rise there, killing all the views from the southern part of the High Line.

Be careful what you wish for.

Renzo! Meteorites! ART! The Whitney Breaks Ground in MePa

    CURBED

... The Whitney's new galleries, designed by Renzo Piano, will rise alongside the High Line, a terraced palazzo clad in metal and glass. Renzo displayed a styrofoam model of his plan, and compared the building's form to a meteorite that has fallen from the sky, resting atop a framework of glass ...

More cool stuff at the Whitney website including a really good VID that shows off the building.

The metal cladding is back! Thank the lord the money-raisers (they've brought in over $500M so far) were able to get enough so that the pre-cast "stone" exterior has been dropped. The north face has an industrial look, with a big smoke stack rising up the side and into the sky.

Some screen grabs from the vid ...

    It's only a technicality:

Development Challenge Process is pending Zoning Approval.

Every head honcho in city government was at the groundbreaking today. Plus this project has been unanimously approved and lauded by everyone from the Community Board right up to the Mayor -- and Mike was the master of ceremonies at the celebration today.

This is great news. Now, we need to get rid of the rancid Interstate Foods POS next door.

Ohhh... this one's gonna have a nickname. That West St. facade looks like something, but I haven't figured it out yet.

This building looks absolutely horrible. Its boring with no grace and its overbearing. Why do people keep hiring Piano? Hasn't he designed enough dreary NY buildings (NYTIMES, Morgan Library)?

Don't hold your breath. Mayor Mike announced today that they've just negotiated to be in that spot for another 20 years.

Those meat businesses service lots of downtown restaurants. You can't chase out all the supporting businesses where folks are actually doing work keep the fancy shmancy places up and going.

That sucks. They should go to the Bronx or NJ. That building and the asphalt lot along West Street look awful and detract from this beautiful area.

The NY Times building is hardly dreary. Maybe one of the best, most unique towers to come along in New York in a long time.

Maybe Piano is one of those that does well with height. Squat buildings on the other hand, he's not so good at.
