Thread: Subway Lampposts

    Default Subway Lampposts

I've been hooked on these NYC photo threads lately. I just love looking at this city, nothing compared. But I've noticed in a couple of pictures the lamppost above the subway station is different. It's a blue & black "M". I was wondering if this had any special meaning, or are just lil' anomalies. Thanks so very much!

    .....It's to the far left.

I think it's for MTA, parent organization of NYC Transit.

Yeah, that's what the old logo looked like.

On a similar topic, what do the different color lamps mean? I know green means always open, but what about the red ones or the half-white ones?

Green indicates a 24-hour entrance, but not necessarily a 24-hour booth, so you might need a Metrocard with $2 on it to actually enter. Red covers everything else: exit only and part-time entrances. Of course they're not always accurate ... one of the part-time entrances at the Wall Street 4/5 station has green lights (AND erroneous directions to the nearest 24-hour entrance).

The ones that are half-white are just a different style of light, intended to better illuminate the sidewalk around the entrance. The meaning is the same.
