Overall, I like the way the building turned out, but I'm disappointed in how the the damaged walls of the original structure were rebuilt.

The workmanship is good, but the new masonry lacks any of the detailing of the original, and looks like a postwar apartment building. And it wouldn't have taken much - the original building was a simple warehouse - stone headers and sills, maybe a simple brick cornice. And the metal window frames look cheap.

I don't know why they bothered saving the north wall. Just makes the difference more obvious.

Default Saving part of the wall

Weren't they obligated to save it? It was only the other walls that could not be salvaged were they allowed to put up new ones instead.

Maybe the cornices will come later?

I agree Zippy. The old wall replicas just don't work, especially next to a piece of the real thing. It's unfortunate that the rest of the facade didn't make it, but at least they tried here.

Did they have to rebuild the similar looking brick facade, or could they have reworked the whole design - perhaps replacing the portions of the facade that had to be demolished with a continuation of the new glass curtainwall? I think this might have been a better choice.

The existing buildings were not landmarked, or the windows on the surviving walls would not have been approved.

I think what happened was that the original plan to reuse the structures and mate them to new construction - the basis on which the project was approved - got caught up in escalating costs as attempts were made to salvage as much as possible. Even when it was decided to remove all but two walls, supports had to be built around those walls before they could complete demolition.

I think if this was envisioned at the outset, they would have changed the proposal to allow a complete rebuilding.

They're putting up the last odds & ends of the various parts of the facade here.

The garage looks to be nearly complete. The lobby is getting there.
