    ^ SCLE Architects.

IMO, taking into account the entire building, it doesn't appear to be that bad.
The base should've been shorter with less wall and more windows. That's probably why you don't like it but the material (granite?) looks to be first rate and hey, it's different, I don't see it that often.

The tower portion gets an A- grade from me and the base gets a C+ for an overall grade of B.
Actually, that's better than my college grades.

The glass balconies exponetinally improve the buildings design. Its not often when you can say that balconies help a buildings design, but they not only help it, they bring the design together, and give the building a certain edginess.

I think this building's appearance will progressively improve as they complete the finishing touches... I'll be reserving judgement until then... Here's an interesting link on how they are struggling to finish selling out the units... I wonder what implications that might have for the Veneto across the street and the new building going up on 2nd and 49th. Not to mention my overpriced unit I bought a year ago at the top of the market!! Ouch!

that base is so atrocious, although the balconies do seem to add to the tower, but that base -_-, i hope they fill in those blank spaces with something...

OMG....it looks like maybe a low-budget small town police station. Compare that base to the row of tenements to the right. Which would you rather look at every day?

That base: part of some other building...right?

    ...an ugly other building?

Perhaps the base is part of an incarceration unit to house residents who violate the condo rules?

The base is disgusting, a blight on the whole streetscape of that stretch of the avenue. And the ass who designed it calls himself an architect.
Ray Charles could have done better.

MO, taking into account the entire building, it doesn't appear to be that bad.

So what were the architect / developer thinking? Is there anyone who can clarify what this base portion is meant to convey from the developer's POV?

And how does something like this get from the idea / proposal stage to the point of actually being built?

It would probably be doubly disturbing to see a photo showing how this relates to the buildings on the opposite side of the Avenue.

The relation is currently to a construction site. Recent pics shown here: The Veneto

In addition to the Veneto construction site, there are indeed buildings still standing on the block opposite this. The whole block is NOT a construction site for Veneto, only a portion of it. And the relation sucks.

Well, if you want to get really technical about it, neither 310 E 53rd nor the Veneto cover the entire block. They more or less take up the same amount of street frontage on 2nd. But don't take it the wrong way, I definitely agree that the base is deplorable, and that even a modest effort could have been made to make it look acceptable. The horrible relation is best scene in this pic that you took a little while ago:

They could have at least attempted to keep the height of the streetwall, and even if they were insistent on that style for a base, it could have turned out decent if they arranged the windows to echo the adjacent brownstones.
