But the black one is more obvious because she is the only black woman ON the poster...

    Ah well.

Construction fence has gone up here ...

Demo teams were gutting the marble and other fixtures yesterday.

To secure both its long-term revenue streams for the college, Cooper Union also has leased an underdeveloped site at Astor Place between Lafayette Street and 4th Avenue to the Related Companies, which is building a residential structure designed by world-renowned architect Charles Gwathmey. Once the academic building is completed and occupied, the current engineering school building at 51 Astor Place will be razed and the property leased for development of a mixed-use commercial and academic structure.

The most exciting part about this project is that the new building will give Cooper Union enough space to allow them to raze this monstrosity.

Whew, that's a relief. Pic looked like it was meant to be of the kiosk.

I was in the area today.

I also like the new rendering then the old one. It is an improvement. Although I do wish they had incorporated the old building on the site and built something new above it. That would have been awesome.

Agreed - that yellow building (51 Astor) is pretty terrible, but the Hewitt Building has some charm (albeit scruffy charm) to it.

I won't be sorry to see 51 Astor go, it's a blight on Astor Place. But I will miss that Starbucks. When it goes Astor Place's Starbucks level will be dangerously low (only 1!). Maybe they'll move to the the 2nd floor retail space in the Sculpture for Living.

However, the new building will include an expanded Starbucks, a Duane Reade, a Commerce Bank, and a small Cingular retail outlet.

Does anyone know the footprint size and the number of stories planned for this building? Also, what is the fate of the small street (Shevchenko St.) that runs to the side of it.
