That is true, but the tone of the first post strikes me as odd. Perhaps if DnH explained the reason for his curiousity, it might make more sense.

Heaven only knows what unspeakable crimes have been conducted in this edifice.

Truly the scariest project in the city.

Photographers don't necessarily endorse their subjects. 8)

DnH: What sort of photos would you like - actual murders, or would general mayhem and overall misery be sufficient?

Crime statistics are recorded by NYPD precinct. You can research all the New York City crime here. The Marcy Houses are in the 79th precinct.

Bad areas and projects are two different things.

    Where are you located, DnH?

Crime in NYC is the lowest in 40 years and is about 200 on the list of crime in cities, dead last in major cities. Nothing is as bad as you've heard.

If I had to pick a "worst" neighborhood. then I'd say that Bushwick or East New York were pretty "unsafe." But even that is relative to the City itself, not other urban neighborhoods that are a lot more troubled. Both neighborhoods have improved greatly, in part thanks to better police coverage and community activism.

I've never been to Stockholm, so I really can't compare the two areas.

Projects in New York City are scattered throughout different neighborhoods. In other US cities, I've noticed that public housing is generally concentrated in certain areas.

Any reason for the question? Just curious. Planning a move to the Big Apple?

Red Hook has indeed improved greatly. At this moment, there probably isn't a single neighborhood in New York that isn't undergoing some sort of resurgence.

That said, however, I can tell you from personal experience that it's a pretty good idea to watch yourself in certain neighborhoods, especially late at night.
