De Portzamparc is quickly becoming one of my favorite architects. If I had a choice for an architect for a New York building it would be between De Portzamparc, Gehry, and Safdie. I hold De Portzamparc above Foster, Rogers, Meier, and Nouvel and they are among my favorite architects as well. I just wish I could pronounce his name.

I agree with you, Stern. He is awesome. I hope that he's designing the two towers that Extell is planning on 57th Street. They could be utterly magnificent.

I'm thinking that this tower will still go up without NYCO in the base. Part of the master plan regarding this avenue is to relocate Laguardia and ML King high schools and put luxury towers on those properties. Preparation includes the work currently being done on 65th. St., in order to create a more attractive entry into that immediate area.

Stache noted in the thread re: 400 PAS that demolition has started on this structure which, like 400 PAS, is owned by Kalimian. Gary Handel is listed on the permits for the new 42 story building to rise on this site, which is potentially good news because he seems to be the guy that works with Portzamparc. Therefore, Portzamparc's beautiful proposal might actually rise here!

P.S.: What's the address for Handel's website?

Don't bother looking in Handel's site, this project is not there.

Anyway, recent applications submitted to the DOB shows that it is now 42 stories and 470 feet tall, down from the 60-70 stories that had gotten us so excited before.

Thanks. Portzamparc's website lists the building as 43 stories and 180M, which is about 590 feet. There's a good chance that Portzamparc's design, in a modified form, will be built.

I'd go with the DOB's listed height instead of Portzamparc's website as the more likely figure.

I agree. That's why I said that it might be a modified version of Portzamparc's design.

I think it's by Gary Handel. It's a shame considering what was close to being built. We could build one of the world's most architecturally stunning cities with all we have demolished and all that was never built.

Yeah, now that I think about it, the base while nothing great would be just too complex for Costas to come up with.

He would've done a glass box for the base.

Just add this one to this city's long list of "what could've been..."

I'll say it now, this city sucks. Gotta find some other one to follow and root for.
