Looks like a large amount of billboard space has just been leased (excerpt from http://www.finfacts.com/irelandbusin...10004660.shtml ) :
Corona Extra, the best-selling imported beer in America, is buying big twin signs on 1600 Broadway, the new 27-story building at 48th Street owned by Sherwood Equities. The signs, which are scheduled to go up on Monday, each measure about 92 feet high by 35 feet wide and show open bottles of Corona with limes wedged into the necks.
The signs will face south, toward the big Budweiser sign attached to 1 Times Square, the southern anchor of the district. That is only fitting because Anheuser-Busch, the brewer of Budweiser, owns 50 percent of Grupo Modelo, the Mexican company that brews Corona Extra.
Grupo Modelo and Procermex, a unit of the company's international division responsible for United States sales, signed a multiyear agreement to lease the signs with a part of Sherwood Equities known as Sherwood Outdoor. Executives at Sherwood Outdoor oversee the leasing of signs for 1600 Broadway and the building to the south, 2 Times Square, which is the northern anchor of the district.
For pedestrians facing north in Times Square, or computer users browsing on Google Earth, the Corona Extra signs will frame the giant signs on 2 Times Square, for (from top to bottom) Prudential Financial, HSBC, Samsung, Coca-Cola and Pontiac.
"We feel the ads in Times Square will bring a lot of benefits," said Roberto Viejo, chief sales and marketing officer at Procermex in San Antonio, "not just for the New York market but for the world market."
Corona Extra is distributed in 150 countries, Mr. Viejo said, so the visibility the signs will derive from being at the so-called crossroad of the world will help build the brand's image internationally as well as in America.
I walked by this site yesterday and noticed the additional signs hanging from two sides of the building. They are HORRIBLE! I would be so pissed off if I bought into that building with a balcony apartment. The view is totally destroyed. Its like living behind a highway billboard sign! What a total sell-out on the sponsors part.
Anyone who bought into this building could clearly have seen from Day 1 that the plan was to cover the buildings in signs. But the reality of the size of the signs -- as opposed to how it looked in lttle renderings -- could definitely cause some remorse on the part of those who bought a balcony apartment.
I walked today by the new glass tower on 57th between 2nd and 3rd (on the north side) and noticed that they're finally putting moldings over the floor plates. This leads me to believe that the developers of 1600 B'Way will do the same thing. I have never seen a glass and aluminum building with exposed floor plates.
You're seeing one now. "Taste" doesn't seem to be on the lips of Sherwood.
Well, that's obvious, no New Yorker would buy in this location. Most of my friends think I'm insane to live between 9th and 10th, 2 1/2 long blocks west. Only someone who doesn't live here would think that living ON Times Square would be a good idea. I suspect most of their sales are to rich people who plan to use them once a year on New Year's Eve.Originally Posted by pianoman11686
This makes the Orion's location look like Central Park West.
The ad in the Sunday NY Times for this POC (Piece of Crap) shows the word "IMAGINE" in huge block letters across a photo of the building -- but strategically placed to hide any evidence of the huge signs projecting from the building. The ad gives the impression simply of some dark tower with angled windows and balconies ...
Clearly the marketing folks on this one know it is a turkey (looks-wise) and are trying to disguise that fact.
That's hilarious (and true)!Originally Posted by ddjiii
It looks like there are maybe 4 apartments (the few that face onto 48th St. -- and only those at the very top which rise higher than the hotel across the street) that will have a clear sight of the ball dropping. The rest will just look down on the thousands of people crammed into pens by the NYPD.Originally Posted by ddjiii
And imagine trying to get into or out of this building on New Years Eve!
The building looks like any standard glass building built in Arizona or LA for that matter... It boring frankly... Where's the risk I've seen more design ingenuinity in Istanbul... Thankfully, there are still bold designers in this city..
Stuart.
I walked by there today, and they've started putting aluminum strips over the concrete floor plates. I think this building is decent. I wonder if it will ever have cooler signs. That would be nice.
The interesting thing with the sign placement is that those Corona bottle signs are visible from the opposite end of Times Square perfectly framing the Renaissance building.
