Nice how the setback pretty much lines up with Carnegie Tower.

At this point on, the views every apartment will be spectacular. I think the architure is 'nice enough' - but the buildings' interior views & sunlight will be the big attraction for future occupants. This is one of the most interesting new residential projects I can think of now under construction here in NYC.

There is no better forum for NYC architecture fans than Wirednewyork. IMHO

I saw the tower for the first time yesterday--I didn't really realize how massive it is until I saw it in person.

As seen through the Central Park tree canopy, from the Loop Drive at about W. 72nd Street, One57 rises serene in the distance ... supreme and paramount.

That massiveness is the reason for the pixelated facade -- meant to trick the eye into thinking it's not a huge bunch of boxes with a curve here and there.

I'm willing to bet money that it was intentional. Most of the setbacks here are very contextual; my favorite is the lower setback facing 57th Street, where its height and bulk exactly mirrors the setback of that Japanese bank building directly to the east. Now, that awkward little office tower with a weird setback in the middle plays in perfect unison with the lines of One57 rising next door. This contextuality, complete with a very elegant facade execution, is why this is probably the best highrise building going up in the city at the moment (excluding the WTC), and will likely remain as one of the most effective midblock skyscrapers for decades to come. It's no small feat to properly execute a midblock supertall.

Makes the old brick and limestone beauties on CPS look positively quaint.

But the setback makes sure it does not look out of scale.

    Looks bulky...

I think the appearance of its 'bulkiness' will disappear somewhat when the orange construction fences are replaced by sky-reflecting glass. Particularly on the North face. Also, the North facing decoration at the very top of the tower will have more of an impact on the eye.

Buildings always seem to slim down when the walls (even masonry walls) are complete.

Looking again at the picture I replied to, it is probably the hoist that makes it look quite a bit fatter.
