Having been to Vancouver -- and witnessing what has been and is being built -- the zoning guidelines in effect there are creating a level of building that surpasses the basic standard we now see in NYC.

^Sounds like the rigid guidelines we saw in BPC. Trade in brick for gray/blue glass. What's the retail like in Vancouver?

They tend to have smaller storefront spaces. Not sure if that is a zoning requirement. But NYC is implementing such guidelines in the new zoning for certain parts of Hudson Yards development, in order to minimize the vast expanse of single tenants.

^^ I didn't know that, Lofter. That's surprisingly cheer-inducing news. I don't think it makes sense to have a citywide blanket zoning regulation keeping stores beneath a certain square-footage limit (which would mean no Macy's, L&T, Bloomingdale's, Sak's or other dept stores, after all). But in the context of superblocks, megadevelopments and early 21st-century utopian projects, I think it's a big positive.

What?? ^ You don't spend your evenings slogging through the text of pending zoning regulations?

Only Mondays through Thursdays. With that limited schedule I haven't been able to get to the Hudson Yards zoning code yet.

Losing the view of that zebra-striped thing wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Amen. Every time I take a bus out of the Port Authority that's exactly what I think.

Would a twin tower building have only one crane?

Maybe it's just for the sub-grade levels and the base. That crane is pretty far over to the east...another one on the west side seems likely.

So they're going to take away one eastbound lane of 42 St for the next couple of years or will it be temporary?

If not temporary, then the traffic tie-up's that's going to create is going to be insane.

Most of that traffic is entering Manhattan from the Lincoln Tunnel, on Dyer, already and immediately East of the site, so it's not too bad.
