    Default Retail

Has anyone heard what retail might be going in to the building? For the life of me I can't find any information on that part of the project.

There might not be much. One side is almost all hotel lobby, another almost all theater lobby. The other two sides are blank wall to subway construction. I assume there will be a few small spots facing 42nd, but from driving by the building the other day, I don't think you can expect much retail here.

According to StreetEasy there will be some "exciting" retail here ...

" ... MiMA is a stunning new addition to the Manhattan skyline – a 63-story glass wall residential tower featuring 50 floors of luxury rentals, 151 tower condominiums plus a new 669-room Yotel, exciting new retail and dining experiences ... "

The MiMA website says so, too ...

"MiMA is more than a place to live. It's also a great place to shop! Our street level retail will provide convenient shopping options. Of course, when you're in the mood for a real spree, world class shopping—from chic boutiques to landmark flagships—is practically right around the corner."

This website has a big image of the building, no signage on the base evident but a few trees do break up the mass ...

Seems this is the the division of space along West 42nd (with a possible small hotel entry here as well, although the main hotel entry is along Tenth at 41st) ...

I noticed they light the ugly white mechanical bulkhead at the top of the tower like it's something to show off.

Just came back from Chicago and tower owners really seem to exhibit a sense of pride when lighting their buildings. They're classy, not tacky like Hong Kong or an afterthought like it is here in NY. Thank god for Durst.

"I agree, can't see Arquitectonica getting too many more commissions in NY after this. I understand there was probably a very small budget for exterior flourishes, but all the moves they did make are awful. Such a waste of a large site...."

No. The truth is Related is a very cheap developer who didn't want to spend any money. Arquitectonica had some very good designs for both the tower and the podium but Realted didn't want to pay.

Disgustingly bad. I don't even know where to begin on this except I hope a meteor hits it.

    Generally, Arquitectonica = shit.

It is a pile or bloody Horse Dung. The ribbon windows look like a boring federal building or even a hospital.

That may to be true regarding the developer: but I will at least give them credit for having the good sense to hire Arquitectonica to do the 'design' work. I generally like their work: they work they do in NYC appears to be more 'watered down' than projects they do in most other locations. I recall once hearing one member of the staff (or it may have been Norton himself) making a comment to that effect: something regarding the 'various' challenges to working in NYC.

Enrique Norten is TEN Arquitectos, based out of Mexico DF and NYC.

Arquitectonica is a whole other thing -- out of Miami and no relation to Norten whatsoever.
