    Default Place 57 - 207 East 57th Street

"Meanwhile, another Clarett Group project is already going up on 57th Street with a design by Ismael Levya Architects. This one, located at 207 East 57th (where a movie theater once stood) is all glass. The crystalline curtain wall could be one of the better ones we've seen on a residential project. Just 68 units will populate 36 floors."

    Wow!

That's one of the best residential projects in the city! (This is the site just east of 3rd where the Sutton Movie Theatre stood, correct?)

I believe so. There's another project going up across the street, where the wiz used to be. Hope that one is an all-glass beauty, too.

I've seen the site across the street but am not hopeful. NYC residential towers are usually lame (despite the fact that they're outrageously expensive). This tower is a real beauty and therefore, a true anomaly!

    Thanks for posting it.

    Default Other tower

There's another tower being constructed right across the street from this project, anyone have any info on it?

The Sutton Theatre was at 205 E. 57th Street.

    http://cinematreasures.org/theater/308

    Excerpted and paraphrased from cinematreasures.org:
"The Sutton property (which included the Wendy's on 3rd Ave between E57 & E58) was sold in January 2004 (the theatre was a tenant) and the new owner had plans to tear it down and build something else. There was an attempt to get the New York City Landmarks Commission to consider giving it landmark status, but the new owner got wind of it and quickly contracted to have the exterior destroyed before it could be landmarked."

The new condo does look pretty nice though.

Any news about the Wiz site across the street?

There's an ad in the Times' real estate section today (2/27/05) for the other new building rising across the street from this one. This one is much nicer.

I didn't see the building on the thread that you posted. It's, obviously, not the brick one on 2nd in the 60's, but it looks a little like that.

Can anyone scan the ad from today's Times? (I don't have a scanner.)

    From http://cityrealty.com:

Place 57 topped out and about 90 percent sold 07-NOV-05

The 36-story Place 57 tower has recently been topped out and is already about 90 percent sold out.

A project of the Clarett Group, the mid-block building at 207 East 57th Street will have 68 condominium apartments when it is finished next spring. Clarett recently developed the 64-unit Opus at 2770 Broadway on the Upper West Side and is building Sky House, a 54-story condominium tower at 11 East 29th Street and Chelsea House, a 13-story condominium project at 130 West 19th Street Its other projects have included the handsome Post Luminaria at 385 First Avenue at 23rd Street.

The attractive, blue-glass façade at Place 57 is about 80 percent finished.

The building was designed by Ismael Leyva and its northwest corner is sharply angled.

The building will have a 24-hour doorman, a fitness center, a residents’ lounge, a children’s playroom, concierge service and individual storage units.

There will be no more than two apartments per floor on average. Other amenities include a 24-hour doorman, fitness center, resident’s lounge, children’s playroom and individual storage compartments. A concierge service is available.

The mid-block building occupies the former site of the Sutton movie theater.

Working in partnership with famed crystal maker Baccarat, features include a lobby with crystal lighting and decor and an outdoor garden ornamented with chandeliers. Both are designed by interior designer Vicente Wolf.

^ We should send cityrealty a thesaurus, in the hopes that they might describe a building with some word other than "attractive".
