Thread: Downtown Brooklyn Development

    Some random thoughts...

--City Point is turning out well, although the top of the tallest tower is screaming out for a cornice or crown or something.
--Avalon Willoughby, what a mess. They threw everything including the kitchen sink at it.
--203 Jay has the potential to be really, truly, agressively awful. Here's hoping the final product is merely bleh.

    And speaking of Avalon Willoughby...

542 Fulton street has survived for almost a hundred years, but its future looks shaky. A Liggett drug store was here. http://bklyn.newspapers.com/image/59857663/

Ha yup. My band's practice space is in Gowanus and I was also getting a car worked on a couple of those days.

Demo almost complete for 117 Livingston, a 21 Story residential. Given the location, I hope it's not ugly.

Demolition of Schermerhorn-Livingston parking garage complete, digging started.

It takes an really ugly building to make you miss an ugly garage. I think this does it.

The renderer got a bit carried away .

This Skinny Tower o' Condos is Coming to Downtown Brooklyn

June 18, 2015, by Jessica Dailey

A five-story prewar walk-up in Downtown Brooklyn is being replaced by a building that is very much not a five-story prewar walk-up. The new 88 Schermerhorn Street will be a slender, glass-faced 27-story condo tower, for which New York YIMBY has the first rendering, created by Think Architecture and Design. The building will be just 33 feet wide, and 22 of the 23 condos will occupy a full floor, but the penthouse will have two floors and a private terrace.

At 27 stories and 280 feet, the building will certainly tower over its neighbors, but it won't be noticeable in the ever-growing Downtown Brooklyn skyline. The new structure, developed by Second Development Services, will only replace one apartment building, but the rendering wipes out no. 88, as well as the neighbors, no. 86 and no. 82, even though those properties will remain.

Permits for the new building have yet to be approved by the Department of Buildings, but the old building is already being demolished.

As seen on Google Streetview, there are three prewar walk-ups, but only no. 88 (farthest away in this view) will be demolished.
