Default Thompson Hotel - Lower East Side

Michael Pomeranc's new hotel, a.k.a. Thompson LES is currently under construction.

Here's a brief mention from a NY Times article awhile back:

...Attracting even more attention, the New Jersey-based Pomeranc Group, which owns the luxury hotel 60 Thompson, will start demolishing some of the buildings on the east side of the street next month to make room for a 22-story luxury hotel.

...The new hotel will have several dozen overnight hotel suites as well as condo-hotel units and luxury condo apartments; the precise numbers of each are still being worked out, according to the developer. The hotel is also supposed to have bars, restaurants and an outdoor pool and will have two entrances, one on Orchard Street and the other on Allen, which Michael Pomeranc, the developer, calls a ''boulevard in the raw.''

''We try to offer enough amenities so people who stay with us feel as if they are at an in-town resort,'' said Mr. Pomeranc, a partner in the Pomeranc Group.

But in terms of design, this building, unlike his 60 Thompson, will ''blend more of the area of the Lower East Side,'' he said.

This is now a couple of floors higher -- the set back section on Allen has two floors above the set back.

    Why call it "Thompson"?

Thompson Street is in the Village / SoHo.

Not sure why it's called that either. It's on Orchard St. Why not call it simply "Orchard", got a nice sound to it. I don't like those renderings that were posted on this thread. They look much better on the architects website. Does anyone know which one is more recent?

website: http://thompsonhotels.com/ (click "Thompson Lower East Side")

The renderings here ^ match the ones that are posted above.

I agree that the renderings on the architect's website look better -- more detailed.

That swanky pool facing Orchard St. looks like it will be Party Central.

(At least until they build on the newly-cleared lot across the street ... )

Yes, this building works on this site surpisingly well. As for his 60 Thompson Hotel...well, that's a whole 'nother ballgame I care not to delve (contender for ugliest SoHo building anyone?)

I'd post the building here, but I'm sure the moderator's at Wired New York have a policy against offensive images.

60 Thompson is shown on their website but it was in the dark. Now I know why.

This one's taking a mighty long time for such a little tower.

    From the Allen St. side:

    From Orchard St.:

Meanwhile, another shorter, 8-story hotel is planned across the street at 180 Orchard:

That hole at 180 Orchard has been sitting fallow for almost a year.

This Thompson Hotel is looking really boring -- all grey and black -- and not in very interesting way. Plus it's taking forever to get finished.

I think they missed the LES boat on both of these.
