ONE Pilobolus: Aquatic

This program exemplifies Pilobolus’ signature partnering style, anchored by Aquatica (NY premiere), a meditation set in the oceanic underworld, with breathtaking leaps and amazing forms that bubble to an original score by Brazilian composer Marcelo Zarvos. Also making splashes on stage: Warm Heart, Brass Ring and Day Two. (Day Two contains partial nudity)



TWO Pilobolus: Megawatt

In Megawatt > Full Strength, the company’s first evening-length work, Pilobolus goes over the top with a full-course feast of nonstop, edge-of-your-seat antics. A comic tour de force reflecting the craziness of our time- with music from Primus, Radiohead, Squarepusher and others- Megawatt > Full Strength transforms the physically impossible into eloquent beauty. THREE Pilobolus: Suspended This program highlights the gravity-defying Pilobolus works in which the dancers are suspended by silks, ropes, hoops and more. Don’t miss the NY premiere of BUGonia, a scintillating duet in which two women form one unusual creature-part plant and part animal- that blossoms to Ed Bilous’s original score. Dancers will also fly in Monkey and the White Bone Demon, Ben’s Admonition, Dark Moon, and Star Cross’d.

Two seasons ago, Belgian dancer and choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker caused a sensation in the New York dance world with her company Rosas’ performance of Rain. Now, The Joyce offers a rare opportunity to see Ms. De Keersmaeker up close in a critically acclaimed solo performance to the timeless music of Joan Baez. Witty, edgy and lyrical, Once is a revelatory work of dance theater, performed by one of Europe’s most captivating artists. Contains partial nudity.

In the beginning, the first man was born a dancer. He danced alone until the first woman became his partner. Together, they created new movement, and the dancing was nicer. Thus begins Thierry Malandain’s evening-length ballet Création — set to Beethoven’s The Creatures of Prometheus — which reimagines humankind’s awakening and its exit from Paradise as the evolution of dance: from the first court dances, to the codification of ballet and then to the modern dance liberators of the new world. This audacious, enchanting, poetic and earthy dance showcases the athletic sensuality of this remarkable French company.
