SummerStage enters its 20th Anniversary season having presented over 750 free concerts. City Parks Foundation estimates that since 1986, two and a half million people have seen performances at SummerStage.
The mission of Central Park SummerStage remains the same: to bring a broad array of new music, dance, spoken word and film to New Yorkers, from the heart of the city. This year, SummerStage will feature: soul crooners like John Legend; jazz vocalists like Cassandra Wilson; dance performances from Ben Munisteri, Trisha Brown and Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Dance Company; readings from novelists Marilynne Robinson and Ha Jin; the world music of Femi Kuti, Lila Downs and Khaled; the comedy of the Upright Citizens Brigade; brilliant new films from Brazil; celebrations of George Balanchine, Nick Drake and the city of New Orleans; and dance music from the U.S., Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

The 28-year old Sri Lankan-born M.I.A. represents a new type of rootless, nation-less pop performer, one who can effortlessly graft images of violent revolution and Third World poverty to block-rocking party beats. The music on her debut album, Arular, is impossible to define, an irresistible mash-up of British garage, Jamaican toasting, American hip-hop and South Asian bhangra (to name just a few of its elements). Rolling Stone called M.I.A.’s music “weird, playful, unclassifiable, sexy, brilliantly addictive.”

Bhangra is the lively marriage of traditional Punjabi music from India and Pakistan with electronic dance beats. One of the prime movers of the New York bhangra scene, DJ Rekha (Rekha Malhorta) dedicates herself to spreading the music of South Asian youth (or “desi”). The founder of S.O.B.’s wildly popular “Basement Bhangra” night, as well as the dance party “Mutiny,” Rekha was one of the first DJs to bring to bhangra to New York’s clubs. Jane called her "among the genre's most important players in the US," while New York Magazine noted that Basement Bhangra is "the must dance destination for young South Asians as well as an expanding number of dedicated clubgoers." Central Park SummerStage Experimental Rock

Battles ignores the rules of tempo and timing, creating an abstract and timeless blend of instrumentation, computerized beats and manipulated voices, to craft a uniquely organized sound. In 2006, the band released their debut album EP C/B EP, a collection of obscure EP releases. Their new full length album, Mirrored, has attracted international acclaim.

Black Dice, formed at the Rhode Island School of Design a decade ago, have two albums out: Broken Ear Record and Manoman. Now based in Brooklyn, the sonic groundbreakers push the limits of experimental sound in rock music by focusing on only a few notes per song mixed with doses of distortion.
