They need to bring the L train up 10th Ave to connect with the 7.
It's only in question as to when. The Yards will be developed, there's no question about that.
They need to bring the L train up 10th Ave to connect with the 7.
They also need a 7 stop at 8th. Ave so you don't have to walk down that crowded corridor.
The return on investment at the railyard is what is going to pay the debt on the #7 project. Without it, the project would be a failure of capital expenditure. In such a scenario, it would have been better to spend the money to construct an extra station on the SAS, between 14th and Houston Sts. The East Village is the forgotten neighborhood of subway service.
The momentum of the original large-scale renovation blinded them to the obvious - move the convention center. The land is now better suited for real estate development.
@BrooklynRider:
Well, the (L) to (7) connection will be a revolutionary connection, I would like to see it happen but case of when and how.
@stache:
Well, I do not see a point of that, the crowded corridor is not an excuse for a station. The (A)(C)(E) already has a station there and it is only one street away. Americans should stop wasting money and start walking, such lazybones (no offense).
@ZippyTheChimp
Well, the East village sure is the forgotten neighborhood for a subway Service, while I would definitely feel a station at 8th St. - St Marks. wouldbe benficial because it is a major tourist and resident (resident = people residing in the Tristate Area) attraction and destination. But, I am not sure if their community and community board accepts a station there. It is always questionable.
Regarding a Second Avenue station between 14th Street <> Houston: Residents / CB for the EV were never, from day one, included in any official proposal.
Hard to not "accept" something never offered.
@lofter1:
Thanks for the information...
The 2 TBMs are somewhere north of the 34th St station shell. Expected to be at 8th Ave by June.
Massive Cutter Head Poised to Drill Tunnel for 7 Train Extension

That big beautiful specimen you see dangling behind our mayor is the front part of what will be a 100-ton tunnel boring machine, or "TBM," as they say in the boring biz. Today workers lowered the "cutter head" part of the TBM into a "launch chamber" hole near the intersection of 25th Street and 11th Avenue, where come spring they'll begin drilling two 7,100-foot long tunnels to Times Square as part of the long-awaited 7 train extension. This totally bad-ass cutter head measures 22-feet in diameter and has forty-four rotating discs. Officials say the TBM will start boring sometime around the end of April, to be followed by a second TBM one month later, in mid-May. Each TBM will place pre-cast concrete lining rings, 1,890 in total, along the tunnel as it excavates; the lining rings make up the permanent liner of the finished tunnel. They're scheduled to finish the required excavation in the spring of 2010, at which time the follow-on work will begin, with the new service opening in December 2013. You can set your watch to it!
In a statement, Governor Paterson explained that "by extending the Number 7 line to 34th Street and 11th Avenue, we are introducing a vital lifeline to one of our city’s least developed areas. As we fight to restore confidence and prosperity in the markets, it is crucial that we promote the economic potential of the new Far West Side." And Bloomberg hopes the $2.1 billion project will help transform the Hudson Yards vicinity into "a vibrant 24-hour neighborhood." Who knows when that will ever happen, but it at least sounds better than a Jets stadium.

And there's talk of sealing the subway vents that flood habitually.
I don't think they can do that. Sealing or raising?
The dreaded Grimshaw again.
