425 also has a lot of exterior lighting that washes out views of interior lights.
If I'm not mistaken...Project runway housed it's contestants there in the past.
(and I agree with KenNYC- the building is hideous- shame on you Michael Graves)

It doesn't really bother me that much. I think the Windows are too disproportioned though.

Minor off topic question, does anyone know what the "Gaudi" esque building is around here. Somewhere in the 50's or 40's, center island. The facade is similar to this:

Not like a lizard, that's not what I mean.

I actually read an account recently about the poor maintenance of hallways and common areas in this building due to the lack of oversight by residents, reason being that are few residents in the building. I can't recall where I read the article or else I'd post it here.

This area is full of beautiful, older ornate buildings (should be made a landmarked district)...

I agree. The buildings in that area are magnificent.

Yea, that area has not changed much over the last 40 years. It looks like a block where they filmed a scene for the French Connection. Vintage New York City!

Its a pity so much of 5th below 34th is full of crap retail.

That's true between 42nd and 34th, but that will change as the area changes. The retail between 14th and 23rd is nice. That part of 5th rebounded quite some time ago and its retail scene improved dramatically.

True I should have said between 34th and 23rd.

Great pictures! I'm an ironworker on that job and always love seeing pictures of it's progress.

This building is now (not sure since exactly when) a part of The Setai "chain", and will apparently use that name, in case someone wants to add it to the thread title.

Having seen The Setai both downtown and in a couple of other cities, this pleases me a great deal. Makes it change from an interesting to a very interesting building imo.
