    A Double Standard

    September 24, 2005

    To the Editor:
Re "A Sex Stop on the Way Home" (news article, Sept. 21):

It is disappointing to see you paint a distorted picture where men, whom you call gay, sometimes meet in public to find sex partners.

Would you run a similar article listing all the infamous lovers' lanes used by heterosexual couples throughout the New York region?

The article perpetuates the double standard where straight people, especially men, who pursue sex outside the home garner a ho-hum response, but gay men who do the same are seen as lecherous.

City Council needs to pass a law protecting innocent New Yorkers from the heinous dangers of one night stands.
What is more hilarious schade is that you consider sweeping a parking lot, well known among certain circles as a sex stop, for your life mate.

I am certain that the same honorable things can be said about any man driving through the Red Light District at night. They weren't looking for sex, they were looking for their life mate.

My only point of resistance here is the time honored phrase "Find a room!".

Maybe you have heard of it?

    Then again, maybe not.

I often have the occasion to act for these gentleman, and when they appear before the Judge, I am sometimes permitted by the circumstances of my client to say

"Your Honor, My client instructs me that upon seeing the lady he instantly thought in his mind that she DID look SO LOVELY"

They couldn't have been anything other than ladies in the minds of some of these gentlemen.

    coughs quietly
