Tiffany taps Frank Gehry to design jewelry

    by Catherine Tymkiw

Tiffany & Co. signed an agreement with architect Frank Gehry to design an exclusive jewelry collection, making him the first designer hired by the jewelry retailer in 25 years.

The architect, whose buildings include the Guggenheim Museum in Bibao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, will create six separate jewelry collections under the Gehry Collection name, with the first debuting in April. Mr. Gehry, who will work with precious metals, stones and wood, will also design a selection of tabletop items.

He joins a small contingent of designers hired by Tiffany since its inception. Paloma Picasso, the most recent hire before Mr. Gehry, began designing Tiffany jewelry in 1980. Elsa Peretti joined in 1974 and the late artist Jean Schlumberger was hired in 1956.

Terms of the deal with Mr. Gehry were not disclosed. The collection will debut at Tiffany stores in the U.S. and Japan -- the retailerís two key markets. It will launch elsewhere in Asia and Europe in the fall of 2006.
