Costas has managed to do something unthinkable for an architect of such mediocrity: create his own context. He puts up a building (or a few), then feigns contextuality when he designs more for the area. In a way, it's almost genius; the only problem is, the end result is a uniformly boring cluster of towers (like Trump Place).

Indeed. But the thing that bothers me most is the sheer bulk of the building. Why not just go for it and build an 80 story tower? I don't believe there are height limitations on this site. I put together this rough estimate with Derek's photo.

The only bright spot of this may be that the curtain wall looks better than any other building of his. Hopefully the north facade is all glass unlike the south facade. At 57 stories it will probably be about 600 feet.

    Wouldn't you rather have this?

I don't think this one is all that boring... usually all residentials are boring but this one will be good. I love the way the glass slopes up in an angle. Or it seems like it. It actually contemplates the Atelier.

BTW, We should change the title on this thread to 605 West 42nd Street plus the number of floors.

Probably move it into real estate too.

It says construction will start after the Atelier is finished, which is set for January. After demolition and foundation work this will probably start to rise by the end of 2007.

Still no update on the status of Riverplace II. I also wonder if the SE corner of 42nd/11th will be developed in the near future; It has also been rezoned for a tower like this one.

Who wants to take bets on if this will be on cityrealty.com tomorrow? lol

^ For Riverplace II on the website the only thing that change last time I check was that the project will be done till 2009. So it might start next year aswell.

I'll put any amount of money on them using either "handsome" or "attractive" to describe the Atelier.

Since they frequent WNY I'd put money that they'll stop using such adjectives.

What a disappointment and a waste of a prime site. This could have been another Worldwide Plaza in terms of being a mixed use site.

    Unhappy

How disappointing, I had such high expectations for this site (well until it was sold Moinian who spawned the Marc & Biltmore). Also why must every new residential tower on the West Side be designed by some hack (Notably Kondylis and SLCE). All they seem to do is blot out the more attractive office buildings behind them.

    605 West 42nd Street

605 W. 42nd Street, the second phase of The Moinian Group's 42nd Street Development, was designed in close coordination with The Atelier to create a strong sense of place. It will feature two distinct towers creating 938 condominium units. With nearly 1 million square feet, 605 W. 42nd Street's two towers will be 57 and 54 stories respectively. They will be home to 200,000 sf of luxury retail shops and 375 parking spaces.

    * As with the Atelier, Costas Kondylis and Partners drew inspiration for the building's design from the great ocean liners docked along Manhattan's west side.
    * As described by Costas Kondylis, the architect for the project, "Like the buildings that comprise Rockefeller Center, each of the two residential towers has a distinctive character yet work together to define a cohesive whole through their use of composition, proportions and materials."
    * Construction to begin in 2007.
    * Please contact The Moinian Group for more information. 212.808.4000

Two distinct towers? Either the other one is not rendered or this is just one massive building. Only in NY could you have a 1 msf residential tower with only 57 floors. Is building up that much more expensive than building out? Most of the apartments facing south will be blocked by the second phase of River Place anyway.

The view they probably won't have:

All the folks who bought units at the Atelier with east facing views must be jumping for joy

Soon when they look out their windows it will almost be like looking in a mirror!!

How do they get away with calling this thing TWO towers?

It's basically one large block with two different facade treatments.

^ maybe because it has two different entrances? So that is probably how they can claim that there are two different buildings. I hope I am wrong though.
