If Chicago builds a few supertall towers in the next few years, I think NYC will start to get the itch again too. Maybe not for another decade or two, but the time will come eventually. It's not a big deal. Be patient.

WOW this thread turned into a PHLguy-fest, moaning about our lack of talls proposed. GET OVER IT. The time will come, sometime in the future, when we will build tall. As for available sites for this, I wouldn't worry about it. Very few people live in the Far West Side, so proposing, even if it's just 1, supertall will not be overly difficult.

Stop the complaints. Wow. Bank of America is 945 feet. The tallest tower to be built since the WTC. But we're not building tall? There will come a time when Asian cities become like New York, and they will reach their "peak" so to say. Burj Dubai, like ESB, will probably be the worlds tallest for several decades.


I won't lie, I'd like to see more peaks on the skyline, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it like you.

I guarantee you NY will build another very tall building in our lifetimes. Guarantee you. There's not a doubt in my mind. Be patient, and enjoy the amazing buildings going up right in front of us.

There's no way one can "sound upset" when just typing text on a forum. You don't use emoticons, so that makes it even harder. What you do have a strong tendency to do is continuously lament the fact that New York is not "building tall enough", that there are too many NIMBYs with too much power, and stating, several times, that New York will never again see a supertall building. You can't predict what will happen in the future as far as supertall buildings are concerned. There's no reason to claim that NIMBY's will kill all the projects on the Far West Side. Yes, they do get a lot of buildings lowered, but that's in areas like Tribeca, the Village, and Upper West Side - well-established, wealthy areas with historic districts, where tall buildings are viewed as damaging the quality of life. The Far West Side is industrial, railyards, with not very many residents. All a developer has to do is assemble the air rights, secure a lot, and build. I wouldn't be surprised at all if within the next several months, we start to see some renderings of towers planned for that area. In the meantime, we have a lot to keep us entertained.

By the way, there's also no guarantee that either of the proposed 2,000-footers in Chicago (which, by the way, both achieve their height through very tall spires and/or upper levels where no office or residential space will exist) will get built. There's a lot that needs to happen before they get built. And yes, New York will have a 1776-foot tall building within a few years.

pianoman, the towers proposed in Chicago are all very uncertain, but the desire to build tall is very strong in that city. With the new policies concerning height of Chicago towers, I think we will see something very tall built there in the 5-10 year range. Plus Trump's tower is already under construction, and it's no shorty. If that happens, I suspect NYC might warm up to supertall's again, if thoughtfully designed for a suitable location.

Saying new york is over supertalls is stupid. its been said again and again how manhattans geography and rising real estate prices make tall buildings a neccessity. no one will build a huge office tower, maybe but what about mixed use, maybe no super tall for a few years til we get confidence back but look at the stats, 945ft/1200ft boa, 840ft/1046ft nyt, beekman street (hopefully) 1000ft+, 80 south 845ft/1000+ and con ed site even though its smaller than hoped is 860ft and NY has never built like that before so if thats how NY builds when it has no confidence how big do you think we'll go when we do have confidence?

NY needs a john hancock center like mixed use. 1200 feet. half office, upper half residential. over the west side rail yards. the mixed use ones seem like a better investment, a better return on investment and although seemingly more expensive, i think it would fill up quicker. whats the most recent mixed use big one? bloomberg?

It's all part of a new development direction the city is undertaking. It's really very exciting. Nothing but ranches from here on out. Next year, their going to start tearing down multi-floored buildings, and putting up sprawling estates.
