Thread: Light Rail via LIMP?

    Default Light Rail via LIMP?

    Why not use the ROW of the Long Island Motor Parkway for light rail? There are lots of sections that are still open.

    It would run from Roosevelt Field Mall to Lake Success, both of which are major job areas(especially if extended from Roosevelt Field Mall even deeper into the hub).

    The line would loop around the mall, then via the LIMP ROW to Jericho Tpke. Along Jericho Tpke and then up Roslyn Rd. Then it would use the LIMP ROW south of IU Willets Rd until Searingtown Rd. Then street running, either via Shelter Rock Rd or IU Willet Rd. Then back onto the ROW for the last stretch to Lake Success. Then along(but not on) Marcus Av, Lakeville Rd, and Union Tpke as a loop around the office park.

    Stops would be(loops not included in the list):
    New Hyde Park Rd
    Shelter Rock Rd
    some local stops via the street running section
    Searingtown Rd
    Willis Av
    Broad St/Foxcroft Rd
    Roslyn Rd
    some local stops via the street running section
    Jericho Tpke
    Raff Av
    Westbury Av
    Voice Rd
    Old Country Rd
    Transverse Rd
    Clinton Rd
    then around Roosevelt Field Mall

    Alot of the above stops would probably just be little stop signs and a small, ground level platform

    I just thought of something. If there's enough space, maybe put the light rail along the LIRR Oyster Bay Line to Hillside Av, and then via the two local streets the parallel the OB line until Jericho Tpke, and street run it from there. Stops between Broad St/Foxcroft and Jericho Tpke could be:
    maybe Dartmouth St
    East Williston LIRR station
    Shields Av/Lee Av
    Jericho Tpke

    OK, thought of an extension:

    From Roosevelt Field Mall, straight east along the LIMP ROW, between Stewart Av and the Meadowbrook Pkwy. Then it turns down Selfridge Av, across the tracks, then around the field at NCC. From there, through the parking lot(private ROW, w00t) then along some more private ROW along the coliseum and then down to the EAB plaza.

    It really complements my plans for the Nassau Hub, which includes moving Wangs sky scraper/lighthouse/whatever-he's-calling-it-now right onto where the LRT tracks would be(which means the light rail would go right through it, with a stop there(that's the Earle Ovington/Charles Lindbergh stop)). Also, it operates via the proposed Glen Curtiss Blvd extension.

    Sounds tremendous. You should share these plans with some gov't officials, no?

    From what I see on Google Earth, significant portions of the ROW has been developed. Furthermore, I don't think the demographics of the area could really support a mass transit system like this.

    Yes, alot of the ROW has been developed. There are enough sections that haven't been developed though to run a decent light rail line on them.

    And the density definately is there to support this. Nassau has enough people to qualify for boro status. Traffic here is a nightmare. Glen Cove Rd, one of the roads this would parallel for a good part of it, is always backed up during the rush hour.

    Lake Success is a major job area, as well as the Nassau Hub. This line would run to both. In between the two end points, the line passes right through residential areas. Put in a park and ride at Lake Success and Roosevelt Field Mall, and it'll get even more ridership.

    Also, this would serve NCC directly. That means ridership from students as well.

    Thought of another part to this. It'll be like a triangle system. The new part is two lines going from each of the two terminals to the Roslyn industrial park.

    From the Nassau Hub, via the "main" line until Jericho Tpke, then along the NSP to the LIRR OB line. Then, along the OB line to Roslyn. From there, it follows the routing of the N28(Down to Main St, past the clock tower, and down West Shore Rd). Street running from the Roslyn station to just after the Roslyn viaduct.

    From Lake Sucess, via the "main" line to Shelter Rock Rd. Then, continues along the ROW to IU Willets Rd. From there, IU Willets Rd to Searingtown Rd, Searingtown Rd to the LIE/NSP, along the two highways to the LIRR OB line, and up the OB line as mentioned above.

    BTW, is LIMP a really good acronym to use for anything transportation-related? Get it?

    Of course I do....why else would I have made the title of the same thread on subchat How bout some LIMP Light Rail?
