I disagree, Citytect. The reason why individual parts of New York's skyline are memorable - like the view of East Midtown from the east - is because of buildings that stand out like the Citigroup Center, with its slanted roof in the midst of all the flat tops.

I have my qualms about the individual diamonds as well, but if that turns out to be an issue, the only angle you'll see it from is the southwest (Jersey City and southward). Every other view will look like a sharply angled roof line, and I think it'll look great.

From the Hudson River, it looks like a flower growing out of the WFC.

    Default the Diamonds

It does have a bit of a Houston-esque quality to it, but it is the building I am most excited about seeing go up. I'll either love it or hate it, but at least it is not derivitive of anything else currently built or being built in Manhattan, so I'll give it a chance first. At least it is not another needle spire.

Houston-esk? WHAT! This is way more refined than anything Houston will ever see. I do worry about how the irregular diamonds will look but it will still be a great tower no matter what imo.

200 Greenwich Street may serve as a nice complement to the 110-story Freedom Tower. We needed two buildings (not just one) that are taller than the Empore state Building on the WTC site.

I have not read anywhere yet on if this lot has been turned over or not but it looks like it has. They have been at the right depth for about 3 weeks now and last week they started pouring a concrete wall running parallel to Greenwich Street at the very bottom.

That wall is to shore up foundations for the temp. PATH station, some of which were built inside the T2 site and are now exposed after all the earth was removed around them. Those footings have to be rebuilt elsewhere before they complete excavation up to the subway box. It won't affect turnover of the site though, which will be in the next couple of weeks.

Port Authority May Miss Deadline For Tower 2 Site at Ground Zero

By PETER KIEFER, Staff Reporter of the Sun | September 26, 2008

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is expected to miss the September deadline it set to turn over land for Tower 2, to be built by the developer Larry Silverstein at the World Trade Center site.

The Port Authority was supposed to turn over the site to Silverstein Properties on June 30 and since then has incurred a $300,000-a-day penalty, which it must pay the developer. Earlier this month, the Port Authority said it would turn the site over by the end of September, but according to a number of sources, that deadline will not be met.

As of the end of September, the Port Authority will have incurred $18 million in penalties for the Tower 2 site. That figure, coupled with the $14.4 million the Port Authority paid as a result of a previous missed deadline, pushes the authority's total penalties over the $30 million threshold. If the Port Authority fails to hand over the site by the end of October, the penalties will be more than $40 million.

A spokesman for the Port Authority, Steve Coleman, said the agency still plans to turn the site for Tower 2 over by the end of the month.

The executive director of the Port Authority, Christopher Ward, will present his assessment of updated deadlines and budgets for the Freedom Tower, the museum, the memorial plaza, and the cultural and transit centers on Thursday. Mr. Ward's report is expected to show, finally, how far behind schedule and how far over budget the project is.

According to the Daily News, the PA has completed its excavation of the foundation and will turn the site over to Larry Silverstein later this week.

If the pace of work at Tower 4 is any indication Silverstein isn't gonna mess around.

From the pics that I've been seeing it doesn't look like there has been that much progress. Am I wrong?

It is hard to see with the shadows on the webcam and in pictures, but it seems like he is very far along on the foundations.
