Actually, I thought I saw the last floor clad with green glass last week. I could be wrong though.

It's not glass. The steel has a greenish color to it, possibly from the fireproofing. If you look where they removed some windows at the lower level, you can see some exposed steel the same color.

They now have an orange net at all of the openings, i'd suppose for safety... it looks like they're pretty close to removing the cladding on another floor by the end of the week, and that the glass on all floors behind the black mesh has been removed.

This building was quintessential 1960ís New York. I hate how everything about NYC is becoming whitewashed and erased. This building was erected and stood when Bryant Park was a dangerous place; it was still a gritty place until about 10 years ago. This Building and the Grace Building were somewhat tenacious for being built on the edge of a business district; they were frontiers and had a certain dynamism. The cityscape is not as much of a loss as the Lower East Side is, and the architecture isnít as much of a loss as 2 Columbus Circle is, but itís unfortunate nevertheless, especially since itís so very unnecessary.

There was a flatbed of glass in front of this site today. However, it was on 42nd street between this and BOA, so it could have been glass for BOA. Anyone else see this today?

Anyone else find it bizarre that they have stripped the top ~ 20 floors but the huge Verizon sign at the top (facing south) is still there?

Must have been some clause in the sale contract for the building ...

Verizon has that advertising space till 2012. Id assume then maybe Metlife will use the top, since this building is going to be there hq'ers

And I asked this in the B of A thread -- but it really belongs here ...

Anyone know why they're painting the newly-exposed steel that light blue/green color?

Might sound silly, but maybe to blend with the glass, so it doesnt stick out like a sore thumb?

I thought that ^^^ too ... but it seemed too obvious.

    Sometimes obvious is right ...

I doubt the color has to do with matching the glass - the steel will eventually be covered with sheet rock anyway...

My best guess is that it is related to the asbestos abatement in the building. With asbestos you can either a) remove it, or b) encapsulate it. Unlike tiling or pipe wrappings you can't really remove the spray on fireproofing, so maybe this is some sort of permanent spray to cover the old asbestos-filled fireproofing?

As I said, this is just a guess.

That makes the most sense to me. You won't be able to see the steel once they apply the sheetrock and curtainwall.
