This is bad news. This is a beautiful structure that should not be cannibalized by an addition. I hope that the philistine "developers" don't tear off the cornice.

Admittedly, it could have been worse. I feared that the psycho "developers" might raze this magnificent structure. Isn't Monian the prime mover behind this insanity?

Oh wow, interesting. I often wondered if the same was every proposed for Bloomingdales Flagship 59th St location. That is a complete full block right next to Bloomberg in a prime upper midtown location. I know that store does billions in sales every year, but wouldnt it be worth closing for a few years to redevelop and come back as the all new Bloomies. The structure isnt really all that beautiful, although somewhat iconic.

The addition is the best news one could have hoped for. Otherwise, we would have lost this building for another glass box ala the Drake, Hotel Penn, etc.

I hope it's office but I'm sure it'll be residential.

It wont be on top, it will be to the side and over the old building. Hard to explain but soon enough renderings will be out

    Thumbs up Goodie.

I have always disliked how the two buildings don't match.

Is the building on 5th next to L&T (436 5th) being torn down? Is L&T going to close?

And if you've seen the renderings, is it a great design, or boring?

DOB shows a recent Application for 424 Fifth Avenue (aka 424-434 Fifth, the main L&T Building):

    02/21/2007 (Approved) 104681337 : SKIDMORE OWINGS & MERRILL, LLP
FILING HEREWITH NO WORK APPLICATION TO RECORD COMBINATION OF TAX LOTS 42 AND 48 INTO A SINGLE TAX LOT NUMBER 42
"Tax Lot 48" is the building with address of 436-438 Fifth Avenue

The small building on the northern side of the site is coming down and it will be replaced by a 16-story tower. The store will not close but retail floors will only be up to 6 and the rest of the older building will be convereted to office space as well

I am enraged that so many nice old buildings are being razed. L&T's annex is quite attractive. There is so much garbage that can be razed. It's sad to see nice structures come down.

Isn't this Monian's project? He makes me sick.

Well kliq, you didn't say anything before about any buildings getting razed.

That is definitely bad news about the smaller building. I mean, this is Fifth Ave., couldn't they incorporated that beautiful building into whatever they want to do?

Wouldn't it be more elegant and grander than any boxy glass structure SOM will come up with?

This city is quickly going into the toilet.

    Thumbs down

I totally agree. This is outrageous that the beautiful old building will be razed. What on earth is wrong with them? Oh, yeah, devilish GREED. It's getting more frustrating every week! All over town, New York's architectural legacy is being torn down before our eyes...and there isn't a damn thing to do about it! Buildings like that will never, ever be built again. This decade is turning into an architectural mass extinction, one of the most shameful periods in our history.
Who needs foreign terrorists to bring treasures crashing down, we got destructive putzes right here doing more damage to New York than Islamists ever could.
