Thread: Proposed: The Remy - 101 West 28th Street - by Costas Kondylis

Could be the opening to a slide show of why Manhattan must have design laws:

But then again, who knows, maybe its a fabulously avant-guarde "early 90s David Lynch"-revival design statement... the inspiration :

    ----------

Would the "the-owner-should-be-allowed-to-do-whatever-he-wants-with-his-property" crowd, please step up to the plate and justify this.

    Thanks.

What's there to justify? The fact that the design offends people that have high architectural expectations?

How many times have we seen beautiful, daring designs whittled down to dull shells of their originals because of reactionary community groups?

How many massive hulks have we ended up with because certain people are offended by tall buildings?

How many visionary developments have been canceled because of such mindless opposition to the "uncontextual" and the "out of scale"?

Justify that - and, at the same time, justify why those vocal few have such a disproportional influence over what people do with their own money and property.

Sorry to interrupt this little discussion but I'd like to insert a photo in here if I may.

The REMY site appears to still be inactive from this photo by dallasag at ssc.

    Very puzzling.

yup, nothing going on there. great picture, that. also note the parking garage one block to the north of the remy site that is supposed to become a 47-story hotel and condo tower.

The Fitzpatrick hotel folks are putting up a new hotel tower.

That McDonald's was once a Child's restaurant (I'm guessing you knew that).

Oh yes, I remember now. Thanks.

Silly me, I'm starting to lose track of all these projects that stay dormant for months and months.

If they are expecting a 2009 opening, then we should be seeing activity at the parking garage sometime this year.

I wonder what's going on with that project. The stores were emptied a long time ago, but cars still park in the garage. I hope that that black monstrosity is razed soon. It's horrible.

This is like 400 Park Ave. So. and like the Horizen condo on 23rd. Something will rise on all sites, but it likely won't be as nice as what had been proposed.

They need to open up the sidewalk if they are not going to build anything for now. Funny that out of the dozen buildings going up in the area, the only nice one can't get built. Cursed city.

    Taken today.
