This is horrible. I really liked that red brick building.
Thank you for quoting here! I searched for 225 and couldn't find the thread (despite CLEARLY posting in it previously!) All new updates will be here. I don't think it will take long to demo the school. I am curious if we'll go right from demo to founding, or if we'll have a dirt lot for a while. Only a month or two until we find out, I suspect.
According to this letter from Extell the lots will be demo'd and cleared to street level, with plans for it to remain a blank plot for another year or so before plans for the New Building are filed.
Is that wrt this building or the hole across the street?

The Extell letter is for 220 W58th, which is the parcel on the north side of the project located at 225 W57th.
This is great news.
Hopefully, Extell has a deal with Morton Williams to secure its departure from 225.

The letter is for the school site.
Yes.
When I lived out of state, I used to periodically post an inquiry regarding whether or not the dumpy school was being demolished. I used to live in the area (before Whole Foods arrived) and would shop at the overpriced Morton Williams. Every time I walked by that school, I was nauseated. Now, I'm elated that the day of its demise is approaching. Maybe we'll get a 1,200 foot traditional Portzamparc design on this site.
Don't know that morton williams is going, but from the filings and the scaffolding, everything above MW sure is getting demo'd. Maybe they'll cantilever right out over it...
Extell's permit for 225 states that they're demolishing all but the first 3 floors.
For reference, since the photos above are quite dark, the right half of this building is rather suddenly gone:

Someone on this forum will be happy to know that they are demolishing the CRAP out of the school on 58th st. It's been too late at night both times I've walked by this week to take pics, though.
This is great news. Supposedly, Extell plans a 90-story, 1,250 foot tower here. Hopefully, they will produce a design that rivals Torre Verre.
As long as it's more IGT and less Hotel on 45th St., we're good.
