It's beautiful. BUT: will water, condensation, or general goop&gunk eventually build up under the glass layer?

Beautiful, and unique building --- from the second floor up. What were they thinking when they designed the first floor?!? It looks like it got transplanted from a 70's designed student dorm.

I wonder if potential buyers will end up at WNY. I hope so. I want to hear all about it. This is one I would love to live in.

    Inspiration for 40 Bond's glass-enclosed columns ???

A glass-encloed ceramic pillar ^^^ from the Palau de la Musica Catalana (as seen in the Met Museum's exhibit "Barcelona and Modernity: Gaudí to Dalí" ).

Barcelona's Palau ("Music Palace") was built in 1905 by Lluís Domčnech i Montaner.

    The interior of the Palau:

    CURBED continues the saga ...

    40 Bond Graffiti Gate Update
    Thursday, June 14, 2007, by ROK88

The crew over at 40 Bond worked their butts off yesterday, moving lots of cast aluminum
around bumpy little Bond Street and blocking traffic right and left. A peek behind the
scaffolding showed the gate being attached to Herzog and De Meuron's sleek and sexy
glass columns. And a new sign out front declares:
    Occupancy June 2007
    Last Remaining Residences
One new resident, fresh off the plane from London, couldn't take enough photos of her
new front gate going in. Neither could we. That way we can pretend that we live there, too.

[A 25-foot section in all its glory in front of 40 Bond]

[The gate reflected in a shop window (left) and propped up in front of 40 Bond]

[The gate offers a perfect foothold for climbing, making easy work for the fork lift]

[People in cars were honking their horns, but a fork lift can move only so fast]

[The crew nudges the gate into position and holds off the traffic]

[The crane raises up a section and slowly drops it down behind the security fence]

[Just don't crash that big thing into any of that beautiful green glass!!]

[The crew breathes a collective sigh of relief as the gate is lowered into place]

This gate isn't going to age well.

    Question

Do you mean from the point of the materials used or the design?

I checked out the materials (some were still stacked on the street yesterday) -- it's powder coated aluminum. Nice finish ...

Powder coating is hard to match on a touch-up -- so hope they have a maintenance plan.

And with the way that one guy is using the gate like a ladder not so sure how secure an occupant would feel if (hypothetically) business forced an unexpected trip away from the City and the wife was left home alone ...

Defiinitely would be a good locale for a "Nightmare on Bond Street" flick ...

The security guy wasn't too happy with me taking pictures ("Don't put those on the internet! This is private!!") ...

But I was on either a public sidewalk or in the street (granted I had to find some holes to peak through, as they are trying to keep the gate installatin under wraps) so there wasn't much anyone could do to stop me

I'm very curious to see how the street-level design here will come together ... right now it seems like a completely different structure from what is going on up above. The inward angled bays seem particularly awkard ...
